Ok after a year of procrastinating we my brother and i have finally put the new engine in! :D Because we had never done anything this extensive on a car before we basically had to learn how to do everything as we went, which made things probably take longer then they should have.

Getting the engine out was easier then i expected. With the both of us on each end of the engine and gear box we managed to maneuver them both out as a whole.

Once out, we then separated the transmission from the engine and then begun to pick of the bits and pieces we needed to finish off building the new engine. When the new engine was ready we swapped them over so that the old engine was on the engine stand and the new engine was on the tyres on the ground. Then we put on the balanced flywheel to the balanced crank and crank pulley and also my new extreme HD clutch. Putting the transmission back on seemed to be quite difficult but that may have been because it was 1AM.

Once that was done we then lowered the new engine into place. We did have some issues with lining the engine mounts up but we eventually got it all in.

Starting up for the first time was one of the scariest times of life. We did all the prestart checks and then turned it over. It did start but only for a few seconds of missing and then stalled. :evil: ARRRRRGGGHHH!!!! We quickly eliminated that it was a spark issue or a compression issue which only left fuel. Seeing how the only thing changed in the fuel setup was that when we got the old injectors out of the old engine they had smashed up caps on the ends so we decided to use the injectors that cam with the new engine except for the only good condition old one. So we assumed it was the injectors and took them back out and and tested them with a 9v battery, sure enough the old one was that only one still firing. So next day took them to get rebuilt and flow tested. Put them back in and the engine fired straight up!
We checked there were no leaks and went for a spin. First thing i noticed was that the new clutch engaged really low, this made launches a little tricky at first. After some reading it turned out to be that there was still some air in the system and that just needed to keep bleeding it. It was still a little low so we adjusted the pedal as far as possible and that put it in the right place for a little while but after some use it too high now and ill have to adjust it back.The 2nd thing i noticed was that engine feels about 200% better, way more torque and responsiveness.
Got it home and changed the oil over and then ran that oil for another 500km or so and now have changed it again. Will change it again in about another 1000kms and put in some proper synthetic oil ready for some track work.
Im setting the car up to do supersprints and motokhanas. So there will probably be a few more posts with suspension and rollbars etc in the next month or two.

Ok new exhaust is in... i chose the Roadsterport 3 as it is supposed to be quietest of the aftermarket exhausts and one of the best power increasing ones as well. I also replaced the old cat with a magnaflow hi flow cat.

Looks fantastic! sounds really nice but is still a bit too loud, it has interchangable baffles so might look into getting the quietest one for on the street and take it out at the track.

Finally got to go to the track the other day for the first time in ages. First time with my new bd bar and enough time to play with the shocks a bit. I set my personal best at a 1:16.5 at about mid day. There was a lot of slow traffic so it was hard to get some solid laps but her are two of the fastest i managed on my old adrenalines, which are now very melted :D

Well Well, It is funny how things turn out.

I sold this car to my Little Brother quite a few years ago and have helped him take this car through a few variations over that time.
It is now a very fun little car that so far has been reliable and quick on the track while still fulfilling Daily Duties.

I have a few plans for this, Lots of Track Time for one. :D


If anyone is curious as to what i have been driving for the past year and a half, it has been a Renault Sport Clio 172.
Was a fun rorty little hatch but it never quite did it for me on the track in Stock Standard form.
Was a blast on B Roads though.

Here is a video from the MX5s last SOTS day with my brother driving.


It is a pretty quick car but has not had much time for a real setup.
I am looking forward to taking it further.

I have spent the past couple of days sorting out a few tune issues on the MS2 and it is all coming together nicely.
So far anyway!!

The Wideband is connected now and setup so it matches Tunerstudios plus few other niggles mostly worked out.
Idle, ASE etc etc

i have ordered a set of 15x8 6UL GEN4s which should be here mid October.
CAN NOT WAIT! :twisted:



Really looking forward to seeing you guys back on the track with me in a 5 again after my year long excursion in RENAULT SPORT land!

So how are you solving you work transport issues? Or have you forgotten that is what got you on the Clio route having been overcome with the urge to be back in an MX5?
