Re: [WA] and1's 2005 MX5 SE
Wow so a lot of time has passed and my car has not moved for a while...
Parts finally coming in:
-Supertech pistons. 84.0mm, 9.5:1 comp
-Manley rods
-ACL bearings; rod and thrust bearings (main bearings were out of stock at 949. any other cheap places for them?)
-ARP main studs
-ARP head studs
So should be heading to the machine shop next week sometime to get the cylinders rebored.
I'm also going to be making my own oil filter relocation kit with the addition of an oil cooler once everything is up and running properly.
I'm going to utilise the larger filter from late model DC2 Integra (Ryco Z79A) instead of the Ryco Z436.

Looks great! Going to have a go at building the engine yourself?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: [WA] and1's 2005 MX5 SE
Yeah gonna attempt it myself..
Really excited but scared to stuff up at the same time haha..
I'll also be depowering my steering rack soon which will be interesting.
Any tips on those that have done it?

Re: [WA] and1's 2005 MX5 SE
I had Mania de-power my rack. Apart from pulling everything out, they just turned the steering wheel from side to side until most of the fluid came out then sealed the points with silicon.
It works fine - love the feel apart from parking, but you get used to it. Dave and Mania showed me these blocks he has that apparently bring the steering arms into better alignment. That should make it easier to steer. I'm getting them fitted when my bushes go in.

LOTS of reading, especially sites with pictures.

Yep read them all. Just not sure whether I can be bother going that far and removing the piston in the rack or just to gut the pump and loop the lines.
My main reason would be to remove the clutter that the reservoir makes. Would the slop in the spline need to be welded up even if there is fluid remaining in the rack and around the pinion?

Re: [WA] and1's 2005 MX5 SE
Well ended up pulling out my steering rack to do a full proper de-power of the steering rack.
Ended up using some of the FM guide as well as the guide on the MSM forum.
http://www.mazda-speed.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22690.0.html
I busted both boots on the outer tie rod ends but I have a set of R-package tie rods plus a bunch of other parts coming from MiataRoadster.
Hardest part of the job was definitely finding something something large enough to bust open the 40mm locknut that applies pressure to the yoke.Had to buy another adjustable spanner just so I could undo it.
Removing the piston seal is pretty straight forward. I used my Ozito rotary tool (dremel) with a cutting disk. Slice through it with no issues and its much easier to finesse than an angle grinder . Make 2 cuts on opposite sides of each other and then split with a flat head and hammer. End result:
Nice and clean
Now just need a pair of circlip pliers so I can remove the spool valve so I can weld the pinion
Oh and in between my block came back from Harris Engines in Ozzy Park. Great friendly service from them.
I'll update when the next package arrives.

Looking good Andy. Got an ETA on when you think the car will be back on the road?

With regards the your engine build, I have a few specialist tools, like a piston ring grinder, a stretch gauge, a cam degreeing kit, plus other stuff. Give a shout if you want to borrow anything.

Re: [WA] and1's 2005 MX5 SE
Ok so I finally finished exams this week so I can now get a proper run at putting together the engine.
Rings were gappped to 0.41mm (top ring) and 0.5mm (2nd ring). Oil rings were gapped to according to Supertech's instructions (number I can't remember atm).
I used my old pistons to square up the rings in the bore like the below pic:
The result:
Uploaded with ImageShack.com
That pic was of me squaring up the top rings. For the 2nd rings I removed the top ring off the old pistons so that they would seat in a more natural position in the bore at TDC.
The rings were then clocked as suggested by Supertech:
Then the Manley rods were installed onto the pistons. Btw wire locks are a pain the bum to get in!!
Plastiguage of the ACL race series bearings was next..
This gave me a clearance of about 2-3 thou..
So I buttoned her all up with ARP hardware
Money shot!
Then all wrapped up until I get a little but more free time next week.
