Didn't get a chance to work on the car today but did just get home from picking up my new track wheels.

Some may have noticed, I've had my 15x7 Enkei RPF1's for sale the last couple of weeks. Reason being I wanted to go wider. At first I had made my mind on 15x9, but the only readily available/affordable option for me was 6UL's. A couple of people with 15x9's mentioned that they thought 9's were a bit over kill and 8's were fine. Seeing as I would be running the same tires on both I widened my horizons.

Got an offer to swap for 15x8 +35 Enkei PF01's which I was already considering so I quickly jumped on them. Weigh 12.8lbs each, only 0.4 more then 15x8 6UL's. Yes I realize they're pretty much replica's of Work CR-Kai's rah rah rah...don't really care.

Has some cheap 205/50/15 tires on atm...plenty of room for 225 semis.

Cheers.

An old-ish photo I just realized I've never actually posted here before. One of my favorite shots of the car.

Nothing too exciting to update.

Small progress with the car, Mitch came over today to help remove my soft top and as usual, I managed to make what should have been a quick and easy job seem a lot harder then it did. To remove the soft top the side pillar plastic trims had to be removed. To do so the top bolts of the roll bar had to be undone and as we were doing it we realized the captive nut underneath had now come unstuck. Decided it'd be quicker and easier just to remove the roll bar all together and here lied our problem. When I put the roll bar in, due to lack of accessibility with my drill the holes with the bar and the parcel shelf weren't aligned 100%...making some of the nuts almost impossible to take out now. Soon gave up and went back to Mitch's to grab his impact wrench and lucky we did cos even that struggled on one.

The actual removal of the soft top was relatively straight forward although I did damage the rain rail a bit. With the soft top now out I took the opportunity to fix up the mounting holes now that I can see it clearly.

On my next full day off work I'm hoping to put in the butterfly brace and have a go at some of the wiring/sensors for the coolant reroute.

Image

My to do list before Jan 4th:
- Dummy fit intercooler. Done
- Rip out Air Con. Done
- Finish installing new radiator and coolant reroute.
- Install Torsen Diff. Done
- Install Flyin' Miata Butterfly brace.
- Dummy fit gauges.
- Rip out soft top. Done

Getting there.

So been busy going back to uni etc and slack with updates/documenting with photos.

Lots has happened. Firstly the good.

Car is up and running, hadn't run into any major issues...yet. Haven't put the boost controller in or anything so was just running off the waste gate pressure of 5psi and even then, was awesome.

The bad though, after much thought decided do things right and to get the car engineered. Throughout the latter stages of the build had been talking to Gary at ISMR who is now a licensed certifier under the new scheme. Did all the necessary things I was aware of was necessary from my end such as passing the IM240 emissions test etc.

The time came and dropped my car off for the inspection yesterday only to get a call this morning be pulled up on a couple of things I need to fix.

A couple of leaks with the motor, neaten up some wiring etc but the main thing is the brakes. He dyno'd the car at 120kw atw compared to the 120kw at the motor the stock SE/SP MX5's came out with. Meaning I will need to get a brake test which I've been told involves hiring out a track etc which as I'd imagine is a bit costly and I still have the chance of failing. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Or I need to upgrade to brakes with rotors >270mm (SE/SP brakes) and the master cylinder accordingly. Need to clear things up with him in regards to after market big brake kits such as Willwoods as I've heard some conflicting statements in regards to their legalities.

So back to the garage it goes...was hoping not much needed to be changed and to get the car ready for Wakefield this weekend, now aiming for Anzac day.

Just go with some SE/SP brakes.

It will be cheaper, and you will stop better anyway.

Went for my initial inspection etc with NB8A brakes which pending confirmed power output he may or may not have been able to certify.

The dyno result of 120kw atw he considered a significant amount more then stock SE/SP which requires me to go for a break test even with SE/SP brakes.

So atm have to compare the costs/troubles of sourcing NB8B/SP/SE brakes and going for a brake test vs fitting brakes of larger diameter then 270mm and hence not requiring a brake test. The version 4 Willwood Front big brake kit is on sale though atm from Good-win.......

Just got the car back from the engineer and had a good chat to him about what needs to be done to the car so he is willing to certify it among st other things.

Things I have to fix are:
An exhaust leak from one of the welds.
Some electric conduit/covering on the wiring for some of the sensors.
Padding for the roll bar.
An apparent oil leak from the rear main seal. Bit skeptical about this one as this was changed the same time as the clutch. Going to have to give it a good cleaning and wait and see.
Some form of heat shield for the manifold/turbo etc.
Ride height - stupidly forgot/ran out of time to wind up the coilovers.
And last but not least, the brakes.

One thing I have noticed though. On the dyno papers with power and boost it is reading a peak 6.8psi...have never seen my Turbosmart boost gauge go above 5psi. Will have to look into this.

So apart from the brakes nothing too major. He was willing to certify everything (roll bar, diff etc) as long as I attend to those issues. So close yet so far.

Leaning towards the 11" Willwood big brake kit that Good-Win sell, just have to try and get in contact with them and clear up some things about the brackets etc.

If anyone in metro Sydney is running these please let me know, would like to check for clearances etc.

Sooo close!!!

Congrats on getting this far.

Always wondered, is it not possible to use Brakes from another vehicle on our MX5s?
I would assume it would be cheaper to get hold of say a R33 GTsT Brake setup then willwoods?
I guess you would then need brackets made up and they would need to be engineered, Rotors could be hard to come buy, etc etc..

Such a pain!!

Good luck with it all.

Not going to lie, been having thoughts of why didn't I just buy a car that came boosted from factory...think I just need to drive the damn thing.

I know of a couple people running the FD RX7 4pots but yeah you're right, the main issue even with after market big brake kits is with the brackets for mounting etc. Asking around exploring all options atm. Hope your engineer isn't as strict on brakes.

Tell me about it.
I kind of just forget about the car for a few days, then get excited, then want to forget about it again

If your making 120atw and a SE makes 120 at the crank.
Could you detune your way down to a SE, then use SE brakes?

I assume a retune will happen later for you anyways?
