Time for a quick update!

I bought another car so M&M has been a bit neglected as of late however, I did install some Teins. This is how the car sits now.
Very happy with them! Firm yet still comfortable.

Also went to DECA to do some Motorkhana this weekend.

12.05.2012 Service

It’s the last weekend before our back to back EXE track day next weekend at Winton. The crew gather around for some last minute car preparation.

Image

I test fit my mates 14" RPF1's while they were off his car.

It looks terrible on the 5 haha. The size/tyre/fitment is all wrong haha. I actually considered buying RPF1′s in this size but this now confirms that I’ll be getting 6UL’s as the track rims instead.

Image

My wheels do look a bit better on his Micra tho.

Image

13.05.2012 That's how I roll - Roll bar install

It’s strangely satisfying destroying your car for a purpose.

Image

TADA! 2 hours later and it’s installed!! Awesome new floor mats finish it off perfectly.

Image

The car is noticeably stiffer now. I can’t hear the chassis twisting and creaking when I go up and down driveways any more.

Mega thanks to EXE crew for the gift, and Jim and Dan for the install help.

Bring on Winton this weekend!!

EXE back to back track day for the Win-Ton

19.05.2012 Day 1

The day starts at 6:15am, my alarm hasn't gone off yet but I wake up to the soothing sounds of my room mate Kam yelling out:
"WAKE UP. DOUBLE TRACK DAY! YAYYYYY!!"

For the first time ever we decided to run a back to back track day. We’ve been planning this for months and everyone is crazy excited that the weekend is finally upon us!

Bong was nice enough to carry my semi's up to Winton for me. I've been using these semi's for a few years now and they expired before I even bought them but they are still good (sorta), maximum value!

I get to work changing the wheels over.

Image

1000% happiness, there is no where else I'd rather be!

Image

When choosing race numbers I always pick number 16 for the roadster because he's a 1.6 litre.
This weekend I've been assigned to group B and as a result end up as car number B16...and in roll the Honda jokes!

Bong thinks it'd be funny to draw Honda emblems all over my car.

Image

Session 1: 1:50.8050

So I've been pretty disappointed with my lap times in this car. For some reason I haven't been able to consistently smash out PB's like I did in the starlet. I signed up for the double day in the MX5 to try get in some proper seat time.

I manage a 1:50.8 which is about 1 second off my PB. The car feels great with the new suspension!

Session 2: 1:49.2560 - New PB!

I realise that I can't keep driving this car the same as the starlet so I start to power on much earlier and to realise, no torque steer, no wheel spin, just a compliant mx5 heading in the direction I'm pointing him in. Ohhhhhhh I get it!

Image

Session 3: 1:49.0250 - New PB!

Let's try that again, but get on the power even earlier! Ohhhhh ok little car, you're still ok with that? Cool! As I'm running out of third on some of the straights, I try 4th gear. This means having to drop 2 gears to take some of the corners. Not ideal.

Session 4: 1:48.7440 - New PB!

With some tips from Adam (Elise) I revert back to holding third gear and bashing the limiter a bit (sorry car!) Woohoo! This pays off and I've finally cracked the 48's!!!

Image

Session 5: 1:49.5130

By now I'm exhausted so no PB's but I am really enjoy driving this car. Today is the day I am properly starting to fall head over heels for M&M on the track!

I'm so happy that I get to wake up tomorrow and do it all over again! Double track day FTMFW!

20.05.2012 Day 2

Me: So the plan is, wake up, put some pants on and PB!
Kam: Yup! We should probably brush our teeth too.

Session 1: No fuel = No PB's!

It's a pretty sweet feeling arriving on the track and realising that you have nothing to prep because the car is still ready from the day before!

Image

That is until you go out for your first session and forgot that you didn't fill up and have no fuel left.

Session 2: 1:49.4260

Back out on the track with the Roadsters belly full of delicious 98 RON. There was a bit of traffic for me in this session so no PB's to be had here.

Image

Session 3: 1:48.4830 - New PB!

As I head out for this session Kam makes the comment, "Your car is pretty loud."

I had noticed that it was a bit louder than it was this morning but figure it's just a small exhaust leak and shrug it off. I managed to get quite a few clean laps and score myself a new PB!

Here is the lap:

It's not a PB by much but Kam and I have both managed to go a bit quicker today.

It's time to do what we do best. CELEBRATORY PB DANCE!

Image

Image

Session 4: Broken exhaust

After setting my PB, I decide it's time to have some fun and ditch the roof! It's the first time I've dríven on a track without the roof on and it's an awesome feeling until..BWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WTF is that noise?!

Image

I come into the pits early suspecting that I've most likely broken my exhaust some how. Dan checks over the car and confirms that the exhaust has cracked in half but it's all stillf irmly attached by the hangers. That means it's not actually dangerous to go out like this again right?

Session 5: Expression session 1:49.0310

Much to the crowds amusement and my own, I do another session in the most offensive sounding MX5 you've ever heard!

Image

I'm too busy having fun with the sound of the car and forget I'm on cold semi's and go for reverse entry into the S bend. Whoops!

Thanks to Jas for the video.

Time to pack up and start the long drive back home. 3900 rpm for 2 hours in a car with a broken exhaust is something I do not recommend.

Image

Apart from fixing the exhaust, there are no more plans for this car apart from getting plenty more seat time and improving my driving skills. Plans are to hit up Phillip Island and Sandown in this car before the year is out.

Thanks you to the photographers: Eric, Kam, Dupra, Kenny and Seamew for the photos I used in this post.

I reckon the RPF1's would look good with some more tyre. Also, sounds awesome with no exhaust. 8)

I agree Paul, needs more tyre to look better!

Here's a pic of the broken exhaust.

And a quick clip of it on idle.
