were you having aero balance issue to use only half rear downforce?

Yes James. The guy who did the carbon work didn't manufacture the front clam as per the drawings, so we weren't able to generate enough downforce at the front to balance what was achievable at the rear. This will be sorted before next years event.

Great workmanship and write-up Danny! As usual, your updates never disappoint.
So why did they go all the way to Sydney for the CF panels? Was it sponsored or does QLD not have similar companies offering such custom CF work?
According to my research, that is a really solid time which I assume the owner(s?) will build on for the future WTAs.
Any pics of other cars or Mazdas there (i.e. Gosbee's WAXO4U, the Panspeed or Garage Revolution RX7s
)?

thought so.
what about 3d rear wing instead of 2d? i always thought that 2d wings were most efficient above the roof line in clean air?

Hi Les, the Sydney guy came highly recommended....however, in the end he was unable to deliver in accordance with the contract he had signed. Yes, there are CF companies in Brisbane. We will be seeking one out to undertake the rework of the front clam.

Mate there's plenty of piccies on Boostcruising and SAU forums.

As a rule of thumb that is correct James. However the aero package on the R35 was designed by Andrew Brilliant of FXMD Aerodynamics and modelled using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software. I'd actually designed the rear wing mount to have the centreline of the main wing section to be level with the highest point of the roof, but I was then asked to lower it. I'd say that the CFD modelling showed that the air turbulance wasn't too bad from the rear rake of the R35 cabin.

I got a shot of the Panspeed RX-7 while I was down there:

The finish on the GT Auto car was amazing considering the time it was built in!

Danny,
Speak to Liam at LSM in toowoomba on the carbon front. I have seen a bit of their work and it is very very good.
Awesome write up btw - the car looks very cool indeed! Can't wait to see what you do with the NC now!

Hope that this is the first of many records for the R35. The car is still untouched since WTAC 2011 in August.

Yeah, DOT approved semi-slicks are somewhat limited in R20's! It will interesting to see what the tyre manufacturers do in the coming years.

Re: Renesis NC Track Car - In the Build
The experience and knowledge gained through the R35 project to date has definitely affected the path I was going down with the NC. What began as a project to build a road racer has really transformed into a project to build a "time attack" weapon. I see so much more opportunity to improve the performance...mind you 6 years has now passed...and when I think about it, I really don't think it was going to end any other way....not that I'm anywhere near finished!!!
Originally I was going with the genuine Mazdaspeed body kit..you know, the front bar, rear bar and side skirts. But that's probably a bit too good for a race car and probably not as aero dynamically effective as I was now wanting. So the Mazdaspeed body kit is now on my road registered NC and getting the necessary colour change. I'll post some piccies once finished. Fibreglass/carbon fibre components are better to suited to the application. I've made decisions on the front and rear bars and acquired the below items...they are a bit of a blank canvas as they will be appropriately modified for better aerodynamics.
The rear bar is a fibre glass Mazdaspeed copy.....

The front bar is from Odula and is also fibreglass.....

Another major decision has been to go back to the original wheel/tyre combination (well the rear at least) which will require the installation of extended wheel arches and the cutting of steel work to suit. This was really the catalyst for the change in direction...a plasma cutter will be involved!
The wheel/tyre specs are as follows:
Front: Enkei RPF1 in 18 x 9.5 - 45P offset fitted with Toyo R888 in 255/35 R18
Rear: Enkei RPF1 in 18 x 10.5 - 15P offset fitted with Toyo R888 in 285/35 R18
I sourced the CF wheel arch extensions from Moss Motors (I can't remember who the manufacturer is) and have only stuck them on to get a feel for the work that will be required to get them installed and the work necessary to allow the required wheel travel. Now its looking pretty mean!

Hopefully the Xmas/New Year break will bring some real progress.
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all!
Cheers,
Danny
