Yep, that and to run more boost.

I've been doing some reading, and can offer these two nuggets of opinion:

speed wrote:1. I know the 1.6 heads have poor flow compared to the 1.8
So am thinking the port and polish will help. I figure this a logical step since I'm doing everything else. Will this give me any gains?

Yes. But not awesome ones. If you're DIYing the P&P like STM did, it'll be worth it. If you're paying someone to do it and it's going to cost more than a 1.8 long block, don't do it ;) The ports on the 1.6 head I picked up to do exactly that on would probably be fine with a "resurfacing" (not a polish) they don't have too many casting mistakes, your head probably won't be much different.

speed wrote:4. Will stock head bolts suffice or do I need ARP studs?

As long as the stock head bolts are all still in spec/not stretched, they should be fine. The general wisdom over on mt.net is the arp ones are nice because they hold the head gasket in place while you're putting the head on, but don't add much value unless you're pushing the boundaries of sanity in the boost department.

/end opinions

Thanks Lucus, have been meaning to drop by and have a chat with the machinist but just haven't been able to get the time.
Might see if i can get there on Friday.
As for the studs, they seem a small price to pay for a bit of reassurance.

I'm considering selling the car.
Still have some things I want to do before that and I'm not sure how much I'd be asking.
Lots to think about.

I need to have a serious think.
If i did sell I'm not sure what I'd get to replace her.
Mrs Speed said if I get a "sensible" car that she will get a mx5. She was just messing with me.

just give her the Mx5.

you'll never get your invested money back. or only partially. You're better keeping it & still enjoy it.

are you not satisfied with it? whats making you think? Dont think too hard steve. It hurts.

in all seriousness. Id give my left testicle for a quality car like yours.

I often thoiugnb about getting a more practical car so I can fit my pushbike into it....but hen my passion was re-awakened somewhere along the line.

is it a case that you've got the car where you want it & now you have nothing to tinker with?

STM, Mrs Speed drove my RX7 once. She managed to get sideways and drift it from a set of traffic lights. One of the reasons I like her in a AWD with nanny controls.

My biggest issue is my height.
Sparco works but is a pain to get in and out of and my lower back doesn't like big drives in it.

If I could get a nbab seat to sit as low or lower than the sparco, it may help but we all know that's a mission impossible.

I'd also like longer suspension travel. Basically a NC but I don't want to have to start over with mods, so I'm comparing the little use i do vs something more practical that I'd less likely want to heavily mod.

No! No! No!

Seat is fixable. I agree the Sparco is a PIA to get in and out of. Maybe grab some OEM NB seats, foamectomy them and floor mount them, you'll have tonnes of room.

What suspension are you running? Maybe look into some extended top hats?

Do you still enjoy it when you drive it? I guess that's what it comes down to. The car's certainly have short comings, but they also have buckets of fun and driver interaction that no other car can match. You've got other cars for daily running about, right? If you still enjoy it, keep the MX-5 as a weekend/fun car and only use it when you're in the mood (or when you find yourself forgetting how much fun it is).

Hey mate, Dan still has an Autozam AZ-1 seat still listed on his gumtree site or alternatively Search jdmparts@ rupewrecht.com to find the seat....in red too!
This seat is a fixed back type bucket but with less pain when it comes to entry or indeed 'egress' for that matter.
You can get nice and low on the standard rails and the seat cushion is removable should you wish to trim it down 'foamectomy' style.
I chose this type over a sparco due to lower back issues and can vouch for it's comfort.
Red AZ1 seat is priced at $463 and you could flog the sparco to recover some cash.
