gslender/pezchops,

Did you guys ever get a chance to talk with your machine shop friends re pricing for making more of these?
Or even just selling the plans/bill of materials?

Yep, and yep... I'll let pezchops contact you regarding this as he knows more, but I have the design that I'm happy to share (but doesn't have the bolt/screw holes).

It was pezchops' idea to use little cubes and screw/bolts to assemble instead of welding.

I'm off to the track on Monday, so I'll let you know how well it goes after then. Hopefully it doesn't vibrate apart into heaps of bits.... !!!

GSlender's Track Beeotch!

Postby gslender » Sat Nov 08, 2014 11:44 am

Just filled an empty tank with Caltex Flex - labelled as 70-85 % ethanol and it came up as being 68% Ethanol on my sensor. So much for getting near E85!

Still ok and after a tank of what is now mostly Ethanol, it pulls noticeably strong (which I put mainly down to a conservative spark map that the tune is set to automatically advance with more % ethanol)

So far, startup isn't affected, but will know tomorrow after a night of cooling off.

In Vic, United is guaranteed and advertised as 85% ethanol all yr round.

I disagree as this is not in accordance with the E85 standard and why would a company meet a higher standard, it is not economical. Nowhere on its website does it say that it is guaranteed in Vic that E85 WILL HAVE AN ETHANOL CONTENT OF 85%. If United was proven wrong then it could be prosecuted under consumer law.

Fuel standard for E85 http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2012L01770
1 Acidity (as acetic acid) ------ 0.006% m/m maximum
2 Benzene -------------------- 0.35% v/v maximum
3 Copper --------------------- 0.10 mg/kg maximum
4 Ethanol ------------------ 70–85% v/v
5 Ethers (5 or more C atoms) --- 1.0% v/v maximum
6 Final boiling point (distillation) - 210°C maximum
7 Higher alcohols (C3-C8) ------- 2.0% v/v maximum
8 Inorganic chloride ------------- 1 mg/kg maximum
9 Lead content ----------------- 5 mg/L maximum
10 Methanol --------------------0.5% v/v maximum
11 Motor Octane Number --------87 minimum
12 Oxidation stability ------------360 minutes minimum
13 pHe ------------------------- 6.5–9.0
14 Phosphorus ----------------- 1.3 mg/L maximum
15 Research Octane Number ---- 100 minimum
16 Solvent washed gum --------- 5 mg/100mL maximum
17 Sulfate --------------------- 4.0 mg/kg maximum
18 Sulfur ---------------------- 70 mg/kg maximum
19 Vapour Pressure (DVPE) ----- 38–65 kPa at 37.8°C
20 Water ---------------------- 1.0% m/m maximum

Why? Because there are only two coys in Melb which sell e85 (I think the other is Shell?). The other varies it mix throughout the year. United do it to differentiate itself and it is well known in the tuning circles to use only United.
It may cost United more, but I think they'd sell more.

Not trying to go too far off topic and this is a build thread. I'm saying is that it is NOT guaranteed as I can find no evidence to support that it is. A commitment is different as it is not legally binding however they (UNITED) HAVE to guarantee that the E85 they sell meets the standards.

Honestly, I don't see why it would mater if it was 68% or 85% given anyone using it should use a FlexSensor to auto adjust the tune anyway.

Correct gslender! If the quality of E85 is a concern by race E85 :)

Can you try a tank of straight E85 and let me know how your cold starts are?

So have tried a full tank of straight E85 and cold starts are exactly the same - so my tune and/or the way the MS3Pro manages Ethanol automatically has not resulted in any difference starting. I'd easily say it idles smoother and generally is better mannered now on E85 than it was on plain PULP.

Overall, two big thumbs up! 8) 8)

Are the electric windows and carpet going as well? Looks like our cars are going down the same path!

I was looking at something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DNA-Marine-Radio-Stereo-Built-In-Speakers-Antenna-Cover-AM-FM-USB-MP3-MA6P-/231235649930?pt=AU_Hand_Tools&hash=item35d6b8018a and just having it slide in out, however I don't think it would make enough noise to counteract no carpet etc...

So when will it get some track time?

Some of the carpet (rear) has been removed, but the rest is staying for now.

As for windows... I'd look at manual winders, but not sure on cost vs weight saved. Need to do some research.

Tomorrow hopefully at Lakeside.

I will be swapping out electric for manual on dodgy day so happy to weigh all the parts and let you know. Is it worth it cost vs weight savings well that is another question...

Looking at logs at lunch and notice CLT temps go to 125 - 135 when I'm off throttle at the end of the straight, only for about a few seconds. Then when onto it again it resumes to normal temps.

Odd? Not sure??
