With respect to 'welds may weaken the metal' this is not a true statement. It would be a case of picking the right weld/welder (coded welder) for the task.

The weld idea was still on the cards- but Ben was only going to run with it as option 2, he was just getting conflicting opinions over how welding may effect the frame- per fabricated products like the track dog brace used bolts, so I'm guessing thats why he ran with this idea just to be on the safe side- I'm in Sydney at the moment, but I'll get a proper rundown when I pick it up tomorrow. The bolts are grade 8. (I'll be picking you brain soon too RE prepping the car for track days- if thats ok!!)

ManiacLachy wrote:Is that a new PPF with a brace, or the old PPF repaired and braced?

The diff carrier arms would be fine with poly mounts, even with your power.

Its a new (or I should say second hand) PPF that i got from GCMX5 (cheers Greg  ).
I'll see how it goes without changing the mounts at this stage. I most likely will change them when I can look at doing some track days next year- I'll have to start thinking more about the suspension, brakes and cooling before then. (Ps, my wife told me the visor blanks arrived in the mail today- thanks again mate!)

Daily driver matters see put paid to any thoughts of sidelining the problem child for any extended period of time- (holidays excluded).
I got it back today and took it for a (limited period of time) run and I have to say.... the new PPF bracing has made a significant difference in the way the thing corners and accelerates- similar to when I put the MX5+ roll hoops in.... it feels so much more solid and responds better on the acceleration....
(Ps, Lachy the new visor mount blanks are in, cheers mate :D )

I'm in the same boat, car as a daily driver I do my very best to avoid extended down time. This can be trick sometimes with a car you want to mod, and mod, and mod.

Glad the visors came in. They're not perfect but they blend in well enough - at least you don't have the red hole anymore! Hope they serve you well.

So several drives with the new PPF and fabricated bracing in and I have to say it has changed the launch and cornering dynamics! It feels more solid and sure footed on the hard cornering and rock solid on the launches- time for bigger sway bars too me thinks :P

Wow the Iron Man PPF.
How interesting, I have seen diff carriers fail, but usually from an accident... Certainly keen to see more on how this goes.

After 9 odd weeks of sitting idle after the new PPF brace being put in, time to give it a decent workout..... thoughts of how it goes to come!
I’ll have to call in the tune shop tomorrow and see why on 98 it bounces boost from 14 to 18psi on load :| ........ (1st time I’ve run 98 since the new flex setup just before I went overseas so as not to leave E85 sitting in the tank for the weeks it was idle- normal boost on E85 gets up to 22psi- tuned for 18psi on 98.)
Meantime- a nice layer of paint dulling silt washed off and looking good again!

The “iron man PPF brace” is a winner. The back end feels rock solid after a few test corners and launches! Meantime...... before going overseas for the epic 2 month run, I filled up with 98ulp so as not to have E85 sitting in the tank for a prolonged period. That the 1st tank of 98ulp I’ve run since, um, mmmm...... back when. As such, that tankful has now been run out and I’m back on the ethanol- but the extra heat from that tank of 98 and the period of sitting idle have seemed to initiated a leak in the exhaust manifold. A bit of bolt tightening tomorrow morning when its nice and cool and a wait and see if the high performance gasket fitted has had damage :?

Turbo housing came loose......with top end locking bolts too  All tightened up and good again (MLS exhaust manifold gasket still looks great) - the turbo beanie though literally turned to dust when we took it off- a new titanium one on order and due next week. The holiday was incredible, but the weeks not driving the Child really did make the heart grow fonder of just how much I enjoy (any) drive in it

I'm glad that name has stuck :)

Like titanium fibreglass type heat wraps, they go brittle and crumbly once they've gotten real hot... it's kind of ineviable that they will make a bit of a mess, it becomes a matter of trying to avoid playing with them.

The “Iron Man PPF brace” can be made to be available to anyone if required, just PM me.....meantime heres whats left of the old beanie- beavis, I’m so pissed off with myself that I didn’t have the turbo and dump pipe ceramic coated like I did the others installed :? Total brain fart on my part. I may look at the billet guts for a turbo heart replacement soon and the ceramic coating on, but till then another beanie on order
