Yeah, you're right. There's a balance to be had. Problem is, old Mini engines aren't that reliable (they're old), that's why I like Restomodding. Modern tech with old style cool (think 65 Mustangs with a modern v8).

There is another mini running a Yamaha bike engine. It's quick when its going but never finishes an event.

For me you need to stick to the original block otherwise you may as well go all-out with a spaceframe and super light body because any more power than 120whp and the factory suspension / steering / brakes become the limiting factor.

For reference, my father in laws Cooper S appendix J racecar has a similar lap time as me at Barbagallo... thats fairly quick for a 1963 1.3liter FWD.

Madjak, if you were female (and I wasn't married) I'd marry you!

The cubbies have a little more room up front too which helps.

Re the brakes, have you got the bigger discs from the later rover mini? Believe the are the best "factory" option :)

True true. I love retro look with modern mechs. Reality is that my mini will never be a race car or a daily. Not sure if you've dríven one but you don't need awesome acceleration to have fun in a mini :)

Yup, owned one. Same colour, 65, 1300cc, disks on the front, 10 inch Mini-lites, hydro-spastic suspension. Kept burning valves.

You are 30 years to late Speed. I grew up in a motorsport family of mini enthusiasts and actually met my future wife at the age of 6 on the swings at Barbagallo raceway, who was also from a fellow Mini motorsport family. I learnt to drive in my dad's Cooper S (something that everyone should have to do), my wife's first car was a Mini LS and we now have 3 thoroughbred Mini Car Club kids who all love them. My dad and my father in law are probably two of the most knowledgeable A-Series gurus still around so if you have any queries, send them through via a PM and I'll get an answer for you.

I washed my car in prep for tomorrow. Without the splitter the car looks almost stock... until you start it.

And lastly, my dad's mini is all up and running. I'll try and get a video of it this weekend. I wonder how many mini's have 3D printed fuse box holders?

Solution for overheating while sitting still? Just put a high flow wp a and alloy rad like the one pictured above. Sealed with foam and has shroud. Fine when flogging it up nebo but when stuck in traffic it wants to hit 120c if left long enough. Has stock fan on it...Stock a+ motor in an early 998 rover. Has ac etc.

Round nose Minis look a lot better than the ugly Clubbies.

CAMS Speed Event Series 2016 - Round 1: Barbagallo Raceway Twilight.

I got to overtake a couple of evos and rexes, a few Skyline GTR 32's and a Porsche. Some of them let me pass but others expect you to fly past them on the straight. Not so easy but still fun when you have to pop past them under brakes.

Here is my fastest lap of the day... Happened to be the last lap and at night! I actually like driving at night as I get to really focus on my braking points. During the day I kept getting stuck in traffic which spoiled my faster laps and I never managed to get one across the line. I'm trying to get down into the 67's but I'm stuck in the 68's at the moment.

For some reason, this last run my delta timing was playing up. You can see how effective the shift lights are and you can see my oil pressure gauge on the right. It actually dipped a little under brakes, I think I'll have to look into that a bit further and maybe run a baffle or something. It might be reason I did that bearing last year especially given I had additional aero.

Lightweight crank.

I've been meaning to start this project for 6 months now. Tonight I made up some crank mounting brackets to mount the crank on the mill bed. The bolt holes are on an angle so that i can reverse the bracket to mount the crank the other way for the alternate counterweights.

First stage is to D wedge the counterweights. Second stage is to lathe a knife edge in to the ends of the counterweights. Who knows if it will work.

I'll do a test cut tomorrow on a damaged crank and see how easy or hard it is to machine

I think I saw a post from Nitrodann a while ago where he'd done something similar with a crank. I don't think I ever saw a follow up with it running in an engine.
