I thought the turbo was big, then I saw the wastegate!

Yep, well the aim is to be able to keep the boost low in the low gears, and for that I'm told that you need a big wastegate - it's one of those things that you don't regret going oversized on (like brakes :) )

It's a bit hard to tell the scale, but this is a 17" rim, 330mm DBA front rotor, 6-piston Yellow Speed Racing caliper which only just fits inside the rim with about 2mm clearance. Brakes and rims provided by MX5Mania.

Pretty crazy build!

I've spoken to you on the phone a few times when doing Adaptronic installs and I gotta say you know your stuff!

Good luck with your Superlap plans.

Cheers

Thanks very much! I'd say I know my stuff around EFI/tuning but no idea about race car building, suspension or driving! But this is how we learn I guess!

Cheers

6 point Bond roll cage, heat shielding, new radiator, 2000cc/minute secondary injectors, fuel pressure sensor so I can monitor it!

Yes, the factory catches at the front wouldn't fit with the roll cage so now there are just some plates welded to the cage with holes for the screws that go into the original location where the factory catch was screwed onto the hardtop. So you need a screwdriver to remove the roof at the moment.

How do you go with the 50mm minimum head clearance requirement?

To be honest I haven't measured it; I've assumed that if it's a Bond cage and the beams up the top are up against the inside of the roof, all the way to the edge, the diagonal isn't over the driver's head, and the seat can basically go down to the floor, then I'll defer to the judgement of the people that have been doing it for years. So I haven't measured it - I hear it is a problem in MX5s in general though.

What do people do about it?

Andy, is the bond cage a kit? Keen on getting something CAMS approved in Perth, and custom made over here is not cheap. Does the rear hoop go down to the floor, and can the seat go right back?

Cheers

There's usually two options, depending on your height.

1) Mount the seat as low as possible, maybe even sitting right on the floor. I'm only 5'6" in height and my old Sparco seat with zero padding sits on stock rails about maybe 50mm off the floor. With this set-up, my helmet is about 30mm below the top of my BD rollbar which touches the roof. When scrutineers come calling, I scrunch down in the seat! Those who are less "height challenged" will struggle to fit.

2) Most guys doing MX-5 Challenge in NSW seem to have welded rollcages that are higher than the windscreen. They either run with no roof, or some cut a slot through their hardtop so it can poke through!

... or if you're not competing in CAMS events, maybe the 50mm rule doesn't apply? :?:
