As far as MX5 race cars go this one is no.6 or 7 I think...had just built the Silver SE race car which was a great car but I have a bit of a rule for myself when it comes to cars..."can't afford to own it can't afford to race it"...there was quite a bit of money invested in the car and I could not really justify racing it so I was sold off and I was on the look out for a new racer....

I had built a few race cars by now and they were all pretty normal and I wanted something different so This is where Chris at MX5racing was given the task to find me the MX5 with the X factor....and this was what he came up with...

Image

As soon as I saw it I knew it was the one....we affectionately named it Shreck as it was green and ugly...tan roof, red interior, big ugly nose cone,NB front.,,,it is a 1994 Roadster...sat in Japan for quite a while because it was such a different car nobody really wanted it.

I knew it had a turbo and some shocks but as with most cars you get from Japan you never really know what you get till it lands...

And I drilled holes in it
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Car turned up at MX5racing headquarters and it is actually better than I thought...came with Tein Flex,1.5 way LSD,fancy clutch, and the HKS turbo kit..and quite a few other bits...it's not going to take much to turn it in to a race car.

It had also had a NB front conversion...this pretty much just involves fitting a NB radiator support and the NB bits, the front guards where made of fiberglass and the lower part is re contoured to suite the NA body...never planned to keep the fiberglass nose mainly because you can't whack people on the back without cracking it so a stock NB8A nose cone was fitted.

Thanks to Hume Smash who painted the stock NB bonnet and nose cone.

Image

So we strip it out and off to Streat Neat for the full roll cage...also off to Zi at JDM yard for the Buddy Club seat.

Image

This was going to be a different car so the call went out for a dirty big C/F rear wing....thanks to Chris at MX5racing the dirty big C/F rear wing was acquired and installed...I reckon it looks great...probably slows the car down in a straight line but who cars....

The car was finished as you would have seen and off to the first race meeting which happened to be FOSC at Bathurst easter 2008...this car is sensational across the top of the mountain...not a huge amount of power, a lot of the 2 F cars were driving past down the straight but that was OK...there was much more potential great first run, apart from getting T boned by a knob in a Commodore coming in to Hell corner...off to Hume Smash for some repairs...

Image

Next meeting is Oran Park GP,one of my favourite tracks...also FOSC...1.19sec. lap on treaded tyres...pretty happy with that...still not time for mods. to the car...these did come before the next meeting at Oran GP...fitted intercooler...it transforms the car...this time I do a 1.18.3sec. lap(also on treads)...absolutely sensational...the car is a rocket.

Have only run the car on Kumho Semi Slicks..

Oran Gp...1.18.3...
Wakefield...1.08.0
E/creek...1.48.3
Morgan Park...1.10.5

So now it's time for a bit of a change....Bathurst Easter saw the front getting wiped out in a pretty big crash at over 200k on Conrod Straight...

Image

Unfortunately the fiberglass front guards got wiped out so the car was going back to a NA front...

Image

Thanks to RSW photo for the Moragn Park shot.

And while I was at it time for a change in the power department...new SE turbo set up fitted...

Image

Also off to MX5mania for a new custom exhaust and Adaptronic ECU and injectors and Electronic boost controller...trying to keep the power at about 140kw at the wheels...with the car weighing in at under 900kg...I think the car is going to be a wee bit faster...
