The good thing about the blankets is that they are pretty effective at holding in the heat in and no letting much out, with eaze of installation.
Begi do a good sheild too (not a blanket)

When I had the 3 inch system in, there was a bit of "rattle" issue next to the passenger footwell ( not to mention a fireplace like heat transfer getting into the ecu housing.) However, with some "panelbeating work" with a rock splitting type chisel and mallet by Dave at Chindera mufflers, a couple of centermeter spacing was achived..... ahhhhhh noting like Neanderthal panel work

Today I started out by fitting hose clamps to my intercooler piping and coolant hoses.
I then proceeded to tighten the lower centre manifold nuts as I ran out of time when I was last in that area.
The one in the centre of the below pic was a major PITA.
I couldn't even get the head of an open ender in there.
I ground down a 14mm ring end so I could get it in there.
Even then I could only do a quarter turn or less each time but managed to get it done.
I then fitted the IAT to the IC piping and plugged it in.
After that I fitted my nitrodann washer bottle with a new grommet on the pump and a new y piece for the Jets as the last one disintegrated when I removed the tubing.
The washer bottle needed a longer bolt so that I could get the nut on the other side.
Since I was connecting simple stuff, I proceeded to fit the hoses and fittings for the catch can.
Then the oil feed line.
I did remove the bung on the back of the head but found it used a finer thread then what I had on my line, so screwed it back in and removed the bolt near the dip stick.
Next up was flushing the sump.
Drained it first then just used cheap oil to flush it out.
Put some red loctite on the sump fitting and connected the braided line from the turbo.
I also moved my diagnostic box for the fun of it.
This is what the engine bay looks like now.
I've still got a few fiddly jobs to do but I'm happy with today's progress.
Start up should be either next weekend or the following

Its really comming together mate! Looking forward to the 1st drive feedback.
I remember similar issues with manifold nut tightening where there was a bit sidchrome mutation requred! There may be a market out there for manufacturing specialised tools for for the 5's!!

Was supposed to be ready to start up this weekend...
Yesterday i was distracted with cheap parts for Mrs Speed's VW cabriolet.
Picked up a gear box, good clutch with flywheel and four wheels with 3 good tyres for $135.
After the drive out west I just couldn't be bothered working on my 5.

Today I felt the need to push on but was unable to get some 25mm ID hose for the new BOV...
Since I knew I wasn't going to be in a position to start her up today, I just plodded along at a slow pace.
Fitted some foam strips on my radiator support and the trackdog racing panel.
I also made up a plate to block off my old thermostat neck. As mentioned previously, this is temporary until I fit a freeze plug.
I also pulled the battery and put it on charge.
Bought some vacuum hose for the turbo actuator.
Researched the injector dead time for the yellow top rx8 injectors. Will set at 0.8ms in the MS2.
De-pinned my LC-1 wide band and pulled the wires through the air con grommet in the engine bay and reconnected to the plug, ready to go through the shifter hole under the console.
And I finally fitted my bear hooks.
The BOV hose, oil and coolant is the only stuff I need now. Fingers crossed that nothing more pops up.
I will still need to add 2 fittings after the air filter for the BOV and catch can but that's not going to prevent me from attempting to start

It might. I'll be replacing it will an alloy unit soon but want to off load the 52mm one that I have first.

Happy Australia day!
Since the last update I've fitted a turbosmart kompact BOV that I'll be plumbing in after the air filter.
Also painted and fitted my thermostat block off plate, fitted a circlip to the wastegate actuator, cut a 3 inch pipe that is located between the air filter and silicon elbow on the turbo.
Will have 2 fittings welded in this section for the BOV and catch can.
Updated my tuner studio and amended the injector dead time, refitted the battery and checked all clamps and bolts.
Fitted the sump plug and filled with new oil and coolant.
Sprung a coolant leak at the back of the motor which I first thought was the automotive plus spacer. Turned out to be a missing nipple next to it. Doh!
Fitted a spare nipple and hose clamp. Re checked for leaks.
Then started her up for the first time in over 12 months!
Filmed it with my phone.
The exhaust sounds better than I was expecting although sounds crap on the phone.
I'm yet to connect the wide band sensor and run an auto tune.
Hoping the smoke is just all the degreaser I used in the engine bay and under the car, although there is also a bit from the tail pipe :/

Hopefully I can get the last bits done before then and get her registered.
I'd be pretty keen to go for many drives at that point.

Curiosity got the better of me and I just had to check the turbo.
Oil is leaking out, hence the smoke out the tail pipe for the 30 seconds that I ran the car.
No oil in the exhaust manifold, so I'm guessing it's the turbo seals.
So here I am again...
Now is the time to see how the t28 fits...
