Re: NC Track Car - In the Build
Saw the car for a bit, great flames out the back Danny! Pity my live feed ended shortly after.
The commentators were trying to figure out if it was rotary or not. The exhaust exit plate have it away apparently.

Yeah the stream bombed out around 3:30pm here, which would be 4:30 in Sydney. It didn't come back when I last checked at 3:50, so I assume it was done for the rest of the day.

Hi Danny
Haven't been around much the last year as I sold my MX. Just caught up with this thread and I'm blown away with the skill and talent on show here. More pics of the completed car and some vid to come?

Re: NC Track Car - In the Build
Danny,
How did the car go without any testing beforehand? Looks like a day out at QR may have helped a lot if you had had the time to do so, a couple of comments I heard from others that saw the car said it didn't look too happy through the corners with a lot of snappy oversteer.

Re: NC Track Car - In the Build
Well we did it! Our WTAC 2014 debut for the 20B PP powered Mazda MX5 track car was a fantastic success!!
A real big thank you goes to the Automotive Plus team of Jason Furness, Dave Avenell and Jeff Mason, who quickly addressed any issues as they arose to ensure our track time was maximised during the shakedown. Oh and you too Adrian Zaini!
Of course it wouldn’t/couldn’t have happened without the commitment and support of many people who understood and acknowledged my goals for this race car build. As such I would say a big thank you to the following businesses:
Automotive Plus
Australian Diversified Engineering (ADE)
GT Auto Garage
Ultimate Big Boys Toyz
Goldrush Composites
Mayne Paint and Panel
MR Tuning
Custom Race Electrics
Brett Rogers Motorsport Designs (BRMD)
Engineering Precision Solutions
Xtreme Rotaries
Motec Qld
It was great to have some many forum members drop by pit lane and say hi!
Here are some photos from the event.

....and a couple of videos
Cheers,
Danny

Hi Geoff!
It's great to hear from you. I saw you NA at car show earlier this year and gathered that you had moved it on.
I hope that you are well.
Thanks for the positive feedback regarding the build.

Cheers,
Danny

Hi Matt, testing prior to the debut of the car was never going to be possible. About a month prior to WTAC 2014 I changed the build scope and as such reduced the aero package to about 50% of what AMB Aero had designed. This will now happen over the next 3-6 months. Even if I had one or two test days at home it still wouldn't have changed my cautious approach to driving at Eastern Creek as I had never dríven there before.
Snappy oversteer was certainly not exhibited by the car on the track. It's handling capability was in excess of the level I was pushing it to and it puts the power to the track so well. What they might have seen was me locking the rear brakes a couple of times when sorting the brake bias on the Thursday practice, and then a compression lock-up on the Friday morning. The Thursday test day (only 1 session of 8 laps) and the first two sessions on the Friday saw the brake bias tuned in and the damping rates/bias tweaked to a point where I was happy leave them and focus on learning the track. The thing has an amazing amount of mechanical grip. Due to not being able to complete the full aero package I found at above 200kph the rear downforce increases faster than the front downforce. This made the steering a bit too light at the 200m braking marker on the front straight at 240kph for my liking. Every time I went out I improved my PB by seconds which was really encouraging as I wasn't pushing it hard at all....I was just cleaning my lines and ensuring that I was in the correct gear.
The SII RX-8 gearbox suffers from the same flaw as the NC (plastic selector bushes) which saw me lose 5th & 6th gears at the end of the first session on the Saturday morning. Unfortunately I only had a SI RX-8 gearbox as a spare....which has completely different gear ratios. This certainly changed what I had just spent the last two days working out. In spite of this I still managed to match my best time with the SII gearbox. I plan to visit Eastern Creek at least once before this time next year.
Cheers,
Danny

Re: NC Track Car - In the Build
Hopefully I'll get there as well.
How did the data collection go? I'll try and catch up at Plus when I'm home next. I'll discuss the crane list over here, 3 possibly 4 x 650t ones.
