Same reason everyone uses OEM S13/14/15 turbo's, excellent price, proven performance and OEM invincible reliability.
There are falcons making 400rwhp on these units so Im sure it will do the job.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
Oem intercoolers usually flow quite well as the companies put hundreds of thousands into research and development on them. But they are only made for factory boost and stock potential. A good trick is finding an oem intercooler from a higher capacity engine/bigger turbo setup than your application. Since the xr6 fmic is off a big turbo 6cyl setup, theoretically it should flow quite well on my little 1.6.
Plus its a lot better bang for buck doing this than a crap ebay job etc.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
So I was going over a mates Na6 on monday evening (casper) to find an exhaust leak and give it a once over before a track day I found this.

Cracked manifold.
With plans of a whole weekend racing and leaving on Thursday, the question was asked how to get the car ready.
We could try and find another turbo kit 2nd hand, hunt another cast AVO manifold, or build a whole new turbo system from scratch.
So out came the engine.

And some steampipe is tacked together to trial fit the turbo.

Comparing a 3" V Band dump to the AVO one. Ill provide more photos to the guys who think that AVO dump is good, I will prove that its very close to 2".

Welded up the manifold.

Today I built every turbo related component you can see in this picture. Oh yeah, forgot the engine back in step lol.
Oil feed line and all.

Heres a good look of the 3" Stainless Steel V Band Dump pipe, note the gorgeous food grade Reducer cone, Finally get theses for under 100 dollars.

And some welding pr0n.

In the above photos look again, compare my weld to the one on the flange done by the shop who built the exhaust. And then have a quick look at my finger prints for scale.
Tiny pulse weld.
So tomorrow it will get tuned in Canberra, and it will run wakefield all weekend, then it will be removed for a big tubular exhaust manifold and bigger exhaust next week.
So thats the answer to what can be achieved in 2 days and evenings.
Oh and one last thing...

This thread makes me wish I had more money and expertise to build a turbo setup for my mx5
Great work Dann, as always keep it up.

Looks incredible!!
I still wonder why you never see anyone using a hardline for the oil feed.
Looks OEM and perfect. No having to worry about a braided line sawing its way through things.
Can you do a hardline for the oil return? Maybe with a flex joint in it?

Thanks mate, I know I love the hardlines too.
You COULD do a hardline return but I dont think the benefits would be the same.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
i wouldn't, my experience with hardline's with flex joints is not nice. mitsubishi use to have them and they are notorious for cracking. had one fail a few times in my old 4g63 cordia. now that thing torque steered!
i am sure one could be engineered to work though.

Re: NitroDann's Long Awaited Garage Thread
I would probably do one with a rubber section, but make the gap between the steel pipes maybe 1 inch. That would be good I reckon.

Intredasting...My original Avo turbo powered NA is laid up in its owners garage with a manifold that has cracked in exactly the same spot.
Wonder if it is a thing that the Avo kit does or we are going to start seeing for some reason?
