I'm in the trades and I hate filling the damn truck with diesel for this exact reason. It's the fuel of Satan, as the owner of any open top car should know.

Only posting this recent link as one of the guests is Chris Nash who says he converted an MX5 to EV. Nash very briefly mentions this & that its final weight was only about 40kg heavier. That's about all in relation to MX5s, so manage your expectations accordingly if you take the time (1hr) to listen to it.
