Postby StanTheMan » Tue Sep 22, 2015 5:30 pm

Ok so the air con in Patchy hasn't worked in a while. quite a while.

where do i start to get it working again. It still has the illegal gas from years ago.

Please point me in the right direction.

Have you bridged the switch in the engine bay to check if the compressor clicks? If it doesn't, you may need to replace the comp.
Personally I'd just take it to an air con guy and chat with them about it.
Sorry I can't add any more.
Just wanted to write back as you've helped me in the past :)

check the clutch on the front of the compressor, see if it spins free or locks up

If it's not that, look around the air con lines of any sources of leakage, air con gas has a sweet, sickly smell to it, otherwise, any left over residue should be around there, if it's just that, then the o-ring seals have gone and that's literally a 5 minute job...depending upon which one is gone, if it's on the side, that can be a bitch if you have a power steering pump above it

The compressor itself isn't that hard to change over, takes around an hour

Just get someone to vac the system out first

Also, if there is not enough gas in the system, most compressor will not turn on (like a fail safe)

Best bet is to find a decent air con place

I don't have my fridgy ticket but have learning a fair bit at work. As mentioned it's more than likely a fault with the compressor or a leak in one of the lines. If it hasnt worked for ages I highly doubt you will find the leak by just inspecting it unless it's a reall obvious one, best way is to get it gassed up and have a look and a feel spraying a mix of detergent and water will help a lot.

Thanks for the tips.
Patchy's racing days are over. Working aircon does wonders for fogging up windows when it rains.
