Re: deviants race car
Deviant, couldn't get out to the track yesterday, family commitments and all....
Bugger that you popped an engine. Keep at it, it's a great car. I shared it with Rob at an MX5 club event a while ago, and never having dríven a turbo car at the time it was a hoot!

Turbo is rooted. Happy it is just going to cost me a turbo rebuild but a little dissapointed I have not got an excuse to build a 400BHP engine

Re: deviants race car
hehe thats okay. It's better to explore all the failure points and make sure it is right.
I had pulled the intake pipe off and noticed the shaft has a tiny amount of in/out play and a heap of lateral slop which I know some turbos are supposed to have. When I spun the wheel by hand I could hear a bearing noise / grind.
Next job was a compression test which I did yesterday and got:
Cyl 1 = 178PSI
Cyl 2 = 180PSI
Cyl 3 = 168PSI
Cyl 4 = 172PSI
So I am happy enough with that and I am confident nothing inside has broken. I decided to throw caution to the wind and start it up, engine fired as normal and idled fine with normal oil pressure. I gently increased the RPM to get 0 vac/boost and could immediately hear the turbo start to turn with a god awful grinding noise and a generous amount of oil smoke / oil burning smell.
I pulled the turbo out yesterday arvo which was not as hard as I would have thought, I just soaked the nuts with RP7 and let it sit for half an hour and most came out okay. Of course there was one in an awkward sh*t of a spot that I ended up having to use a chisel and a hammer to turn it 1/16th at a time
There is an issue that keeps happening with this car...it keeps losing the nuts or studs from the exhaust manifold, turbo and down pipe. I know this is an issue so check it before running the car but the last test day it lost a stud and nut from the exhaust - turbo flange leaving just 3 holding it on, a nut from the turbo outlet - down pipe leaving 4 behind and the other end of the down pipe where it joins the main exhaust had lost a stud and a nut had worked off another which left just one holding it on and blowing the gasket out. That was all lost in one afternoon!!! When I was removing the turbo I found that on some of them the nut would come undone but on others the nut was stuck and the stud would unscrew.
The last owner of the car struggled with this to and i know they messed around with different loctites and all sorts but never managed to stop it happening.
Dann, I didnt manage to get under the car to take pictures of the brake calliper bracket but as I need to get under to fiddle with the exhaust I will get them to you soon!!

The missus was very happy that we are only facing a failed turbo and not a failed engine....Can I get away with adding $500 worth of nuts n bolts

Re: deviants race car
You just reminded my that my club membership elapsed! Bugger. It would be good if we could get an MX5 in to each class for the time attack!
I spoke to the man about overhauling the turbo today...not so good news really.
Garrett are no longer supporting ball bearing turbos with individual parts. You either buy ALL of the internal components or none at all. You literally just keep the housing and bin everything else. There are only 2 kits available from Garrett in Australia and they are a touch over $1000 + GST + Labour, machining etc etc. Bloody ouch!!
My turbo man had a look around the shop and thinks he might have enough bits to overhaul one more turbo but that depends on what state mine is in.
I also learnt that these turbos have a nylon bearing cage and spacers which are fine for road use but only last a couple of years with track use before failing. The do brass cages and spacers...only $700 EACH!
Plan from here is to get the man to pull the turbo down and give me a quote on overhauling it and then see how this compares to sourcing something else.

Great photo, who took it?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: deviants race car
I kinda forgot this thread...The original car is now with tinsfci and we are doing a Flyin Miata LS1 swap with some tasty bits chucked in.
The picture is taken by D&D Photography.
My NB has gone from totally stock standard to track hack:
JIC coilovers
Whiteline front sway bar, stock rear
3.9 Torsen
Carbotech XP12 and XP10 pads
MX5+ roll bar
Spec miata seats and 6 point harnesses
Ditched the stereo and made some slimline door cards
Shorty centre console
Ditched the soft top completely
Lightyear CF roof
FRP bonnet
ACT streetlite flywheel and whatever the full face race friction disc and face is
Nitrodann full exhaust system
Works engineering oil cooler and remote filter
Track tyres are Nitto NT01 205/50/15 on a set of unknown brand and heavy rims
I ran it naturally aspirated for maybe a year before deciding to take advantage of spectacular exchange rates and the pre-order pricing of the newly updated Kraftwerks Rotrex kit with C30-74 supercharger.
I paid a bit less than this including shipping: http://store.kraftwerksusa.com/supercha ... -1080.html
Install was piss take easy. The instruction manual was crap and the SC oil cooler brackets didn't work but it is all pretty common sense stuff to get around. I got the kit on a Friday, started on the Saturday and drove the car the following Sunday.
I found that with the intercooler and SC oil cooler installed as per the instructions it was blocking to much airflow to the coolant radiator. I moved my engine oil cooler and the SC oil cooler to behind the foglight holes.
The SC only pushes 7PSI as measured from the inlet plenum chamber and uses a nasty non-adjustable piggy back ECU, 330cc injectors and upgraded fuel pump. I had the car dynoed at it makes a measly 150BHP at the wheels but is rich as all hell. With a proper ECU it could pull another 20BHP+....It is THAT rich!
If I get an ECU, bigger injectors and a track dog racing 150mm pulley it will up the boost to about 12psi and the guys that have done this are making 220BHP at the treads. In fact the c30-74 is good for 350BHP.
Anyway that is money I don't have at the moment so it can wait.
I still really love this rotrex lark, throttle response is still N/A perfect and it just feels like a usefully powerful MX5 now rather than boosted or modified.

Re: deviants race car
Time for another update.
Round 1 of the McRae Rallysprint series 2013/2014 took place Thursday 7th Nov. Only changes have been to chop out the rear bumper for JDM y0 points and pulling a lot more commitment out of myself.
Run 1 was very squirmy due to the amount of dust and crap on the road surface as the roads had not been used in this manner for a while but my times got steadily quicker over the night. The 4th and final run was my quickest and also a new personal best...it was a true Jinba Ittai run...jeez I love this competition lark!!
Okay lets see some footage and pictures (I have purchased these images and a high res set):

Re: deviants race car
This is run all around the facilities at our dragstrip and speedway. http://www.motorplex.com.au/
Luckily I literally live 10 minutes away from here so is the perfect motorsport venue for me.
Rallysprints are supported by CAMS and they have standing regs: http://docs.cams.com.au/Manual/Rally/RR ... ngRegs.pdf
You could find a venue and set these up. The ones I run in are hugely popular...70-80 cars show up. Note that we run as a 'stage 1' rallysprint which allows you to run on an L2S and without full cage etc.
