NA6 MX5 project plus into

Postby ultim8m » Mon Aug 26, 2013 1:04 pm

Hi, My name is Kyle, I have just recently bought my first mx5, the plan is to use it for motorkhana, superkhana, and other basic race meets and sprints. It is in pretty rough shape paint wise (although no major rust at all), and the motor has done high kms (over 300 000) but i got it for a good price and still running and licenced. I have started tidying up the paintwork to get it to a presentable point, however the mechanical side of things is my priority at the moment. When i purchased it, it already has an ARC intake, koni coilovers, momo wheel, and mazdaspeed rollbar.

My plan is to get the most out of this motor and gearbox, until one or the other breaks and then replace both with a low km one, from there ill look at doing some engine work and getting a bit more power out of it.

Album of my progress so far

update: So far i have polished the aluminium bonnet, (not mirror yet but getting there), had the extractors fitted and done a oil and filter change on the motor and gearbox, although i'm going to do another oil change on the motor as it is smoky on cold starts since it was done (i went for fully synthetic, i need something a bit thicker with the kms she has done). acid blasted the wheels etc.

Ive tidied up the appearance a lot still working on paint but for the moment i have done a few touch ups and a rattle can respray on the bottom half

Looks great, I think I might have some of those longer rear mudflaps in black if you want to do a swap.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I love what you have done.

Where are you based? If you're in Vic and haven't started doing Motorkhanas, contact De Bounce on these here forums as he is heavily involved with the Vic Motorkhana crew.

Look forward to seeing more.

I love resurrection projects so please keep posting details+pics.

So what was wrong with the original paint job of these white NAs?

I've seen quite a few photos like yours and it only seems to be the white ones that suffer this type of paint flaking/stripping. Was it just one bad batch of a factory "white run" or was there something wrong with the white paint itself over multiple white batches?

The paint chemical requirements changed (to remove harmful toxins) and it took the car companies awhile to get it right.

Rodsmx5 knows all the details.

Was this only white though?

I've not seen many other MX5 colours of this vintage suffering this badly.

another photo from today,

took it out for its first decent drive, drives a lot better now that the extractors and pod filter have been fitted, i also changed the heater hoses that were leaking.

Not a huge update, tinted the side indicators, polished the bonnet a little more and did a couple more coats of the red stripe.

Lookin' good. How do you find the polished bonnet? Not blinding at all?
