Gussy's Supercharged NB

Postby gussy » Sun May 20, 2012 10:19 pm

So, I probably haven't really done any official write up on my car so I said as I have done a few bit and pieces to it, I'd try and throw something up.

As many of you will know, this was originally owned by Saboteur on here. As a quick reference here a shameless copy and paste of all the stuff originally done to the car:

Jackson Racing M45 supercharger
Jackson Racing Water/Air intercooler
Smaller supercharger nose pulley providing approximately 7psi of boost
Oil pressure, boost pressure and oil temp gauges fitted to center console
X-Force extractors
Simota air filter
Magnacore leads and Iridium spark plugs
Mazdaspeed Carbon Fibre gearshift knob
Stainless steel vent ring and dash surround kit
Mazda chrome sill protectors and fuel lid cover
Complete bare metal respray March 2005 with new softop roof and windscreen fitted
2001 front bar fitted with foglights and factory wiring
Alarm with auto closing windows
Cooling Pro alloy radiator w/ducting
MX-5 Plus coolant reroute kit, silicone hose with internal anti-kink spring
Braided brake lines
Nopro overflow bottle relocation kit

Adaptronic E420C standalone ECU with plug in loom (car loom not butchered), 3 bar MAP sensor and intake temp sensor to eliminate MAF
440cc (x4) Denso fuel injectors
JVC iPod compatible headunit
2.5" exhaust with steel cat, AR25 resonator and Magnaflow rear muffler (inconspicuous yet decent flow)
MX-5 Plus braided clutch line

Trackdog Racing pulley tensioner
Lightened flywheel and uprated clutch

Engine overhaul done Dec 2009:

Low mileage (40k) NB8B bottom end (10:1 compression ratio)
Rebuilt head with new valve stem seals, valve reseat & pressure test
ARP head studs
Rebuilt M45 supercharger nose with new oil & clean
Head/water pump/intake manifold/cam cover gaskets
Both accessory belts
New water pump
New timing belt
Replaced all coolant hoses (inc head, intake manifold etc) with new genuine Mazda hoses
Replaced water to air IC hosing
New engine mounts
New shifter boots
New clutch slave
Front main seal
Spark plugs
PCV valve
Radiator cap
New throttle cable from B2600 ute
T-bolt clamps for radiator hose
New fluids throughout

Over $1400 of dyno time by Matt Spry at PITS

Supercharger kit fully engineered for QLD and NSW.

Anyway, the guy I bought it from had a set of Bilstein shocks and King springs that came with the car.

I got those installed and this is pretty much how the car looked:

After going to a trackday at Lakeside however, it was pretty evident that the suspension was too high and the car was wobbling around the track. Time for some coilovers. :)

I decided on some Meister R coilovers from the UK. The UK guys rave about these and they have a bit more travel in the rear compared to the BC coilovers so I went with them:

Image

Total weight of the coilovers is 12.55kg so pretty light too.

So I installed these with a mate:

At the same time I also installed a Whiteline 24mm front sway bar. I didn't end up installing one on the rear as many people recommend not doing so due to it making the rear a bit twitchy. Sway bar can be seen here along with the coilovers:

I liked the NB8B wheels on the car but I thought some nice 15" inch wheels would be nicer looks wise and also for the handling. After much pondering I imported some Konig Flatout wheels from the USA. These are forged rims and are very light - 5.6 kg per wheel. I got them in 15 x 8 with an offset of +25mm. I also added a set of Lugshack Black spline tuner wheel nuts. Light, strong and they look great in black.

Here's a few pictures of them fitted:

As for a set of rubber to adorn the new wheels, a quick look on many forums brought up about 11ty million suggestions with many conflicting opinions as per any tyre thread, but I ultimately decided on the Kumho KU36 to shod the wheels.

After the suspension settled in and a quick check of everything it was time for a wheel alignment. I took it to Bruce at Leda Suspension in Brendale who came highly recommended. After an initial shock at the "old school" premises and equipment there I drove off and was delighted with the results - the car felt much more planted with better feedback and stability.

The next thing I focused my attention on was getting a better seat. I flirted with the idea of getting a fixed bucket seat but as I drive the car on a daily basis and my other half drives the car also, I decided on some middle ground. So went about sourcing a Mazdaspeed Sport seat and I also bought some NB brackets and I installed it:

I'm absolutely delighted with the seat, so much more supportive than the standard seats and really comfy even on long drives. Even herself loves it. Win!

A while back I noticed a small crack in the coolant reservoir for the supercharger coolant system. I bought a new generic reservoir:

I also had to do some DIY work and install the barb connectors to the reservoir:

I also decided to also upgrade the supercharger coolant water pump while I was at it as the old one stopped working around the same time. I decided to fit a bigger pump to help pump the coolant around the system quicker. I went for a Bosch water pump as used on the 2003 / 2004 Ford Mustang Cobra which has a flow rate of 1200 L/hour. I also took a few pictures of the fittings used to install it:

During all this I also decided to change a few things cosmetically. I didn't like the whole RC car look that the standard aerial gave the car so I went about fitting a MK 3 aerial. I actually had a bit of trouble with this as Australian and Japanese cars all came with electric aerials as far as I am aware and I couldn't source the required manual aerial base required to fit the MK3 aerial. I eventually sourced a manual aerial base from the Uk and fitted the MK3 aerial kit which gave the car a much sleeker appearance I think. I was slightly worried that the much smaller aerial would give me poorer radio reception but it was actually better than standard.
I also fitted clear side reflectors indicators and rear brake light and different gearknob.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the car currently:

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Not generally a nb fan..... but I was a bit dirty this car was sold about 4 months before I got my na and about 2 months after. I like the progression you've done with it.

Such a great looking NB with performance to match.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
