I'm thinking of replacing my hand held uhf radio with a fixed version.
Just wondering where you mounted yours and if you used a permanent aerial mount?
hey rockitman, it was pretty easy, didn't even have to drill any holes in the car!!...............there is a plastic panel directly beneath the steering wheel that just pops out, & there is ample room up under the steering wheel to mount a fixed UHF, I just used a standard UHF mounting bracket which I pop riveted to a piece of aluminium I had in the shed that I cut off at the right length to fit between the metal supports you'll find under there that have holes already drilled for something in the LHD versions I imagine, I ran the power & earth wires straight through an existing bung for one of the wiring looms straight to the battery (no power fluctuations that way, but you gotta remember to turn the radio off )...........for the antenna, I just ran the cable from the radio under the door sill & up behind the plastic panel inside the edge of the drivers door to a magnetic base which sticks to the floor behind the drivers seat when not in use, then slips out & magnetises to the panel in front of the boot when good reception is required. I have a piece of fabric cut out to the shape of the magnetic base so it doesn't sit directly on the paint, & it works just fine.
A lot of people ask whether the radio gets in the way of my legs when driving, but it never has yet, & when I'm not using the radio, I just unplug the mic & shove it under the drivers seat out of the way.
one of these days I must get around to hunting down another plastic panel so I can do a cutout for the radio & make it look all professional like
hmmmmmm.......might sneak around to ORX626's place & see what I can scav off his renesis racecar
