Next-gen 86 to use ND platform?

In one review I read, the reporters felt that the ND chassis was stiffer than the 86 - seems Toyota not only want the better 6-speed gearbox, they want the whole platform!

If the current generation 86 ends up as a single-generation model, it may become as unloved as the BMW Z3?

Well, it has a major advantage over the Z3, in that it's not terrible.

Would be slightly hilarious to see it go from a modified Subaru Impreza platform with the boxer four to a Mazda MX-5 platform - bit of a slap in the face in the Subaru-Toyota tie up, as the article speculates you'd have to wonder about the future of the BRZ. Subaru have been hamstrung for volume by the agreement with Toyota, really couldn't see the numbers or the corporate politics falling in its favour.

There'd be some work in stretching the ND's platform but nothing insurmountable, I guess. Engines would be the interesting question - would they go their own or just use the Mazda 2 litre?
