NB SE coils and leads

Hi All,

I have been reading a little on coils from previous threads but they seem to be to do with modified cars etc. Is their a general rule of thumb for replacing coils and leads- this is for my 2004 NB SE - completely standard...
After I recovered from my initial heart attack at the quote from Mazda for two coil packs and four leads.. I wanted to know if anyone has replaced the OEM coils and leads with NGK coils and plugs and had any issues. I know it sounds like a really weird questions to ask but I don't want to replace them and find that there is some weird Mazda voltage thing that necessitates the use of OEM coils and leads?

also there is no future in this car being modified in the slightest :) So no reason to go for anything for some kind of LS swap in future haha

Cheers
Brad

whats the problem? The R8 coils would fit physically. They would be wired up the same way . ( or similar principle ) Ive run the SE Cops on the same dwell setting as my current Bosch Yaris COPS.

if you have a standard SE ......unsure if the R8 cops would make a huge difference. The \NB cops ( same as SE without the SE Tax)I ran were great. I juts couldn't secure them all that well on the BP4W cam cover

plus with the NB cops I cant get my RPM guage to run. Im sure there is a way. But never found it.

I think you can run regular NB coils, right? Should be able to find some used. NGK leads should be fine, I replaced mine early on but I can't recall exactly what brand I went with.

yeah ok would be interesting to see what the part numbers are for standard 1.8 coils are... and if mazda can explain the difference between coils...

If you have a SE, get OEM coils. After market ones seem to throw a CEL. I went down this rabbit hole for 2 years.

Buy it from Amayama or from mania.

If you can confirm regular NB coils are the same, I found some for sale on FB market place.

I think they are the same but specifically get genuine ones.
I ran some aftermarket ones, whilst the car performed ok, CEL kept coming on which was annoying.

Yeah I've ordered genuine ones.. will be nice to have the old girl running nicely when they get here ... interestingly the car manual says to use Denso SK16PR-F8 plugs in the se. I would have thought ngk BKR5EIX-11 iridiums would have been what they came with.
