Hi all
The engine fault light on my SE keeps coming on, has a mind of its own. I have been told that it is caused by a small vacuum leak??
Does anyone know how to find the leak or have any experience fixing the fault light because it is giving me the xxxts.
Cheers
Steven

Do you have an OBD reader to get the code?

Get a cheap ELM327 OBD bluetooth scanner off ebay, install Torque on an android phone and do it yourself. If you don't have an android then it's easier to get a USB ELM327 and plug it into a PC rather than fight with Bluetooth on an iPhone for a few hours. (Trust me I've been there). Otherwise if you have a friendly local workshop they may scan it for you for free.

Thank you both.
However I know how to cancel the code but it just keeps coming back on.

The Question is, how do I find the vacuum leak that is causing it to trip ??????????????

OK, you keep getting a fault code for a vacuum leak. Is that correct?

Just working from first principles I'd say that means it is registering low vacuum at idle. I'd just tap a manifold vacuum gauge into the manifold somewhere.

If it really is low then keep unplugging and blocking off vacuum hoses on the manifold until something noticeable happens with the vacuum reading. It may be a leaking hose or a leaking device. Brake booster vacuum, fuel pressure relief valve, EGR valve, blow-off valve, carbon canister, MAP sensor, cruise control unit, PCV valve are all candidates that spring to mind.

If the vacuum gauge reads fine then maybe whatever sensor feeds the ECU (probably the MAP) is dodgy.

If you get nothing out of that lot and you're well down on power then I'm afraid it's time to check engine compression and to look for an exhaust system blockage.

There's a bunch of vacuum/manifold pressure stuff next to the drivers side top shock mount. There's a small hose that hooks onto a barb underneath the sensor as shown below, which often falls off. You'll have to look hard, it's right up underneath.
