Weird Headlight Problem with my NA8

Postby Kazer » Fri Apr 21, 2017 12:26 pm

Hey guys im having an unusual issue with my NA8's pop up headlights. When I turn on my car they automatically pop up regardless of whether or not the button on the dash is pressed in or out, once they are popped up i cant put them down by the button either. When the car is off the button works fine to move the lights up and down. When the key is turned to acc the headlights don't pop up, the button still works, then when the key is turned to on the lights pop up, when the key is turned to acc again they stay up, when the key is turned off/ taken out the headlights go down. This is regardless of the position of which the light/ indicator stalk is turned. anybody know of a solution, i love the pop up headlights but i don't want them up everywhere i go, cheers.

The headlight stalk on NAs eventually wears & shorts out & the headlight do strange things. From memory check posts by Rolley on here as he posted something useful a while back.

Btw, check headlight retractor relay if you haven't already:

I'm fairly sure Rolley posted a fix it thread on this, but eludes me at the moment:

Have you tried Mazda wreckers - Imasen LA10 relays are also used for cooling, horn & rear demister on MX5 & from memory used on other Mazdas & most probably other vehicles.

Is the relay La10 the one at fault? I thought it might be the B481-67-7C0B?

From memory my 1993 NA8 uses the LA10, but best to check which one your car is using as LA10, LA12 or B481-67-7C0B is variously used - see note in following regarding use in different domestic markets: http://www.autolinkmx5.com/relay-headla ... 3185-p.asp

So I went for a poke around under the dash, My 5 definitely uses the BB4A677CO as its headlight relay as they don't work any more since I took it out. I had a look at it and from my untrained eye nothing looks wrong, no blown caps/ tracers. I switched some of the LA10s around and the lights still had the same issue, yet to locate any la12s.

Might be a dry solder joint or joints on the PCB. While LA12 relay was said to be used in some markets for headlights, so far haven't seen it used elsewhere on the ADM NA8.

You can see the cracks on mine, I reflow reassemble and it's like new again.

Hey cheers for the help so far 93_Clubman, just reflowed all the joints without any luck, my car is UKdm unfortunately so its hard sourcing this specific part over here. I am going to attempt to use a Adm B481-67-7C0B instead of the UK spec one, from what I can tell so far the only difference is ones green and ones black.

B481-67-7C0B is used in the BG Astina, if that helps you source one more easily.

Pity the inspection & reflowing didn't do the trick, but great you've found a replacement.

Hey guys so its not the relay, just tried it without success with the ADM relay, I'm now going with the theory that it is the indicator/light stalk component. I was lucky enough to find out he had one spare, I will install that soon and hope it works. But out of interest/ future reference for future readers the ADM B481-67-7C0B is compatible and interchangeable with the UKDM BB4A677CO from what I can tell. Cheers for the help so far everyone :)
