Radio squeals like a banshee

My na6 stock radio type CN701/2 has an intermittent habit of putting an incredible screeching sound through the speakers when playing the radio.

The sound seems unrelated to engine revs, power usage (lights, fan, window etc) and nearly completely drowns out the radio.

Is this a known problem with a fix? I'd love to keep the stock radio for them retro feels.

Cheers,
Rich

If you had said that the scream was changing with engine revs I would have said that you had a bad earth, or one of the speaker wires is shorting out.

Did the screaming start after you did any modifications or other 'changes'. Has anything else 'broken' recently.

Have you been on the big forum and searched there? ==>>http://forum.miata.net/vb/

Could be a problem with the headunit itself
Is there any pattern it occurring, does it stop?

No mods done to any electronics just a clean up fn the power window switch contacts. Will be building them back up with solder later but that's another story.

After much messing around it has decided to behave itself when the second bank of FM presets, FM2 is selected.

The gremlin still pops up on any frequency above around 105 on FM1 but I can live with that.

Retro stereo life.

see if you can find a replacement radio from a wrecker?
