Had anyone built a COP setup for the NB8A? I would so much prefer a separate coil for each plug. Is this a simple exercise, or am I having myself on?

I built a cops harness for my NB8A about 3 years ago now. 30 odd track days later its still running strong.

It's pretty easy, in the scheme of things.

I bought the cops off a 2000 corolla from the wreckers, complete with 100mm pigtails. Then cutoff the connectors that plug into the orig coil pack and wired on new connectors to both the orig harness and the pigtails. This way i could put the orig coilpacks back on if i ever needed to. It's only power and earth for each cop and then the trigger wires. 1&3 from one trigger wire, and 2&4 from the other.

I am not sure what you mean by pigtails? I also love the idea of being able to switch back to the original coil setup. What connectors did you use? JayCar?

How did you attach the COP to the rocker cover? Any secrets here?

Pigtail just means a few inches of wiring handing out of the connectors. ie when you cut the wires off the donor wrecker car, just cut them a few inches away from the connectors to leave some wiring to make it easy to splice into.

You have to cut off the original coil pack connectors, as you cant buy the matching connector which is built in to the coilpack.
No big deal though. Just add a new 4 way connector onto the existing wiring

and your new COPs harness.

I used a 6pin connector, as planned to use the 3 wires from each harness connector, however once into it realized the ground/power is shared to the connectors just a few inches down the line, so no need to carry 2x power & 2x ground. Therefore only need 4 wires for your new setup. 1x power, 1x ground, and then one trigger from each connector.


I also made up a small 3 inch patch lead using the original harness connectors on one end and the new one on the other, so I could plug the original coil packs back in if I ever needed to.

3 years on and I've never needed to and can't see myself ever needing to...

I had a mate make up a simple 4mm alloy plate with the holes drilled to the COPs to pass through, 3 holes for the rocker cover bolts and 4x tapped threads to bolt the COPs to.

You will need a way to turn the dwell down, as from the factory it is set to 5000ms, and the Toyota COPs only tolerate 2500ms or so.
I have an Adaptronic ECU so it was a 3second job for me to turn mine down. If running on a std ecu then you may need to look into a dwell reducer circuit that I think someone on here was looking to make. Not sure if it ever eventuated.

It was made, and bench tested. But not car tested.

Once they were made, sent, etc, someone found they didnt work.

I have one sitting here I can post to someone to try, I suspect the one that didn't work could be down to the fact they were using a piggyback computer intercepting the ignition triggers.

I got mine working on an na8 (slightly different signal wiring to an NB setup, (missing a tacho line?) but no big deal). And surmised the same problem outlined in the other thread - it only affected cold startup. I made a bypass for it and it was all good. Its worth the effort, on an na8, its a noticeably improved on cold start/idle.

If you're ok with a soldering iron, can read schematics, read components values, build up your own board and make wiring looms then it's not hard. If you're unsure on more then two of those things, get someone to do it for you.
