NB8a Brake Lights Dont Work

Hi all,

I have a new issue with my 1998 NB8a - none of the brake lights work.

I've replaced the 15A STOP fuse twice. The fuse burns out after pressing the brake pedal for about 5 seconds.

I replaced all bulbs, and replaced the fuse to no avail. I don't see any scorching or smell any burnt light bulb connectors.

Does anyone have any advice as to what the problem could be? I've also noticed my dash light dimmer switch has stopped working (constant brightness despite adjusting) -- could this have anything to do with this problem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Has there been any modifications made to the electrics? Such as a new head unit, alarm, central locking? When adding these or similar devices people have been known to wire them into existing 12v power connections and therefore can overload the fuse. If you are not sure, have a look under the dash, or in the engine bay for something that doesn't look original. The use of plastic ties or non-black electrical tape is a give away.

If someone has tried to wire a new head unit (or additional cabin lights) to the dimmer circuit then it is possible that this is related. As stated above I would be looking for new/dodgy wiring.

edit: Just remembered something similar that happened to a Toyota I used to own. A technician wired in a new head unit and attached the earth wire to the positive of the brakes wiring. When I hit the brakes it blew the fuse.....it also caused the dash lights to go off......
