You probably don't want to hear this, and it might be out of line, but the previous owner had fitted a HID kit to my NB8A and it was horrible. Not only was the light output rubbish but it was dazzling and unsafe for oncoming cars, I got flashed all the time when I was on low beam.

I ended up swapping to some NB8B lights and they are "night and day difference".

I bought genuine ones but you can get some aftermarket ones fairly economically, they look similar to the SE lights:

Make sure you get ones designed for a RHD car or the cutoff line will be unsafe and illegal.

If you're going to use NB8A lights at least do it right. Pull the housing apart and install a set of proper hid projectors along with a hid kit.

The retrofit source has everything you need to do it right.

The standard NB8A reflectors with a hid kit will be horrible and dangerous to other drivers on the road.

What you are asking is fitting for an illegal product. Still an auto elect may do this and you pay their time. My local Ford workshop charges $132 per hour and an auto elect maybe $100. My guess min $50.

my friend has a pet peeve about this and also people who drive with their fog lights always on,its something that really bugs him,maybe his eyes are going bad.
being a local copper,when he's got time on nightshift he stops and books or defects as many as he can.usually when he pulls people over for HID's he generally finds a few other defects that would have otherwise gone unnoticed if these people hadn't self selected themselves.

There's a legal difference between fog lights and daytime running lights, which is what most vehicles come with now after changes to the laws in Europe.

People who leave their rear fog lights on should have their eyes forced open and be made to stare at them for an hour.

I'd argue the 'most new cars claim' and then argue that a light cluster designed for HIDs and some after market jobby aren't really comparable.

You'll find that not many (read: nobody) on here like HIDs at all.
Like MCM say, it stands for 'Hello, I'm a D*** ****.'

If you want more light and/or an improved look, have a look at decent second hand or aftermarket lights.

If your just after some cosmetic changes, have you considered painting the non-reflector internal parts of your standard lights?
It looks great on NBs.

I want to stress that no one on here is having a go at you, buddy. Mx-5's enjoy a reputation as a sensible car, and as such we don't really have the same problems that the Nissan and Mitsu guys do. It's one of the best parts of the car, and I wouldn't want you to end up defected over something as silly as lights.
If you're going to get defected, make sure it's for a turbo

You cannot think that just because new cars have things, that they are legal to be put on your older car.

OP, either retrofit later model headlights (and bumper) that use projector beams, hids will work in them.
Or cut your headlights open and fit a projector unit. Then put hids.
Someone in America did it, and painted it black, looked great.
