Help! - New radio keeps blowing fuses! ( 1990 na panasonic

Postby Brods » Mon Oct 07, 2013 2:54 pm

Hey guys, as the title states the car keeps blowing fuses
i was wondering whether you guys ( and girls) would have any idea why.
The fuses that keep blowing are the 10 A room everytime i even move the radio ( which is out sitting next to the gear stick)
and the 15 A cigar fuse.
The radio requires the acc 12 v and a constant 12 v for memory ( plus the ground and speakers)

And when it is all connected up and doesnt blow a fuse the radio wont power up!!

i've tried getting the volt meter out, and testing but my results are always different
does anybody know their way around this sort of wiring!!!

If the fuse is blowing even when you move the radio, then it appears to me that you have a loose and or/uncovered wire that is shorting against the body somewhere. I have had something similar on another car I owned where the installer connected the earth to a wire that only had power when the head lights were on. Everything worked fine until I turned the headlights on  .

I would disconnect the speaker wiring, and then double check the wiring for the two power sources and the earth. If the headunit then powers up you can move on to checking and connecting the speakers. As most headunits these days are 'high powered' I would suggest running the main 12v power source directly from the battery as you may exceed the original wiring specs. Note that running a new wire will bypass the ignition switch, unless you install a relay. The constant 12v source can use the existing wire that the original headunit would have used.
