Re: ipod/mp3 player/phone holder?
I've got a Samsung Galaxy, and picked up the Official Windscreen Mount for it. Until the GOR drive, it worked rather well for me, but I found it bounced about all over the place when going over rough terrain.
I've attached it to the right of the instrument cluster, right next to the A-pillar, such that with my hands on the wheel, I can just poke the screen. I use that mostly when I've got google maps, the navigation app, or music player on. My head unit has bluetooth, so I've only got the power lead running from the cigarette lighter up to the phone, and I have grand plans on installing some USB (5V) sockets around the dash, so I don't have so much cable hanging around the dash.
Before I had the useful head unit and phone configured, I just threw the ipod into the centre console on shuffle, and let the passenger work it.

I have the iPhone mount from MX5 Mania and its pretty good. It doesn't obscure too much the controls and vents there at the top of the tombstone despite looking like it may do. I bought the one for iPhone 3 as I had one of those at the time, but it fits the iPhone4 perfectly as well.
