I recently bought a nice NA with an aftermarket JVC stereo. Recently, for no reason I can see, it started flashing PROTECT on the screen and won't do anything. I've tried disconnecting the battery and it worked for a couple of minutes then started flashing PROTECT again.
Any ideas how I could fix it?

It means someone didnt know what they were doing or cut corners fitting it. Its shorted out somewhere, take it to your local professional car audio shop and have them find the wiring fault and fix it properly.

The protection circuit is activated in the audio output stage.
It is made to protect the amp from shorted speakers or shorted speaker wires.
A common cause is a strand of copper from one of your speaker wires is touching across to another binding post.
Check that your speaker wires are not shorting out and that the speakers are good.

You have a shorted wire somewhere. Best of luck finding it!

If none of the above, then check how your speakers have been wired up. The installer may have done something dodgy like wire the front and rear speakers up in parallel - assuming they are 4ohm speakers, this would that cause them to draw a 2ohm load on the head units built in amp which could cause it to go into protect.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll have a look at the wiring tomorrow and see what I can see. Wiring is my least favorite thing part of cars. Sigh.
