Different Clusters?

Hi

Will a 1999 instrument cluster work if connected to a 2002 loom or is there a fundamental difference. I have done this and the odometer will not display. Lights, indicators, handbrake, airbag lights, charge and immobiliser light all come on but no odometer? (Immobiliser goes off after 2 seconds).
