Air Con... How to install, where to buy and how much

Postby dave2221 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 11:41 am

So this was almost covered by anotehr member.

they made the enquiry, but ended up buying a MX which had AIR CON.

I am looking at one on Saturday, its a Clubman but it doesnt have Air Con (or powersteerring)

The powersteerig is a pain, as i kinda like the luxury, although i WILL NOT own another car without air con.

So basically,

where do you get a Air Con Kit / Parts?

How much does it cost?

What do i need?

If i could get a propper MX5 kit i am sure my uncle and i could install it ourselves.... so thats a viable option too.

Make sure you really really really want PS before getting into it too deep. Read about what has the best steering feel etc and if u can test drive a car with power steering. My 90 doesnt have PS, and i have chicken arms and have no hassles parking etc, i actually thought it did have power steering untill i learned a bit about my car. It may be different in a busy car park / city but ive had no hassles. but i generally park away from other cars if possible so that might have something do to with it.

before my BMW i had a AE86...

no power steering

and i had 225 tyres all round it wasnt that bad.

i prob wouldnt put it in.... but i would at least like to know all my options before i fork out the money on a MX5 which i may have to spend lots of money on.

i am going to drive the car on Saturday....... by only main concern, is that after my AE86... ill NEVER own a car with out air con........ EVER.

Sydney

Near Hurstville (2221 baby)

I have spoken to a few people now.... and i have been told that the NA6 and NA8 have different air con systems.

also the fact i have to pull the entire dash out.... and if any parts are missing i am f*^ked....

i think its more hassle than its worth and ill try to find a MX with A/C pre installed from factory...........

i am still open to the idea.... but its just looking like it wont work

For air cond you go to businesses specialising in this. You bench mark by using a telephone and asking for a price. New a/c I would guess at $2000.

Currently I have an SS ute, and the steering is heavier in that with power steering than when I had my clubman without power steer. They are so light and well weighted that you really don't need it, and prsonally if/when I get another 5, I would either only buy one that didn't have PS, or rip it out if it was installed.

Send a PM to Boyracer.

He's an expert at supplying and fitting P/S and A/C

I also had a Clubman without power steering, and it didn't bother me too much, although Mrs Benny hated it.
When I bought my NB8A with power steering, it made life so much easier and less hassle and I reckon you get a smuch feel out of the P/S as you do out of the manual steering.

I do agree that you can't have a car nowadays that doesn't have A/C though.

Around 1974, I bought a new SLR5000 and paid a princely sum to have A/C put into it.
My father berated me for wasting so much money on something that he never had, and didn't think he'd ever need.

A few weeks after I had the A/C fitted, it was a really hot day and I had to go somewhere with my dad and so we took the Torana.
A week or so later, my father then bought a new car and it HAD to have A/C in it!

Yep. A genuine SLR5000 in chrome yellow with black and white houndstooth upholstery.

I got mine the day BEFORE they were officially released, and it was so new, they didn't even have the SLR5000 stickers on it, which they posted out to me a few days later.
The really stupid thing was that a few months after I got it, they released the L34, so I had a drive of one, but didn't buy it as I couldn't see much difference in driving between L34 and my SLR, so I didn't buy one.

Mind you, my SLr was a real lemon.
It used to snap clutch cables all the time, and it leaked like a sieve.
