Since I picked up the mx5, I've been wanting to swap out the massive factory headlights with low profile rectangle fit ones. I have seen many kits utilising a 4 lamp setup with two round ones on eachside, but I find it looks sorta tacky...
So I want to throw in a rectangle 180sx/fc rx7 style lamp.
I found a few photos after a lot of searching of people who have achieved what I aim to do.
closest to what I want is this
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc22 ... /photo.jpg (obviously clear though. Not some whack yellow colour lol).
This too I guess
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_gYH9Be9uhsY/S ... llow+5.jpg But I think the lamps sit too far back in this and I would rather the lights be right at the end like in the first link, it looks sleeker and more aggressive that way.
Ultimately, I'm trying to 'man up' my car and pull off a more aggressive jdm look rather than the typical classic roadster etc... I noticed on the forum Jeo has something very similar to my end plan and have pm'ed. But I figured I would throw out a worm on the forum and see if I get any bites.
So are there any kits or will this have to be a DIY job utilising wrecked 180sx lamps and so on?
I know there are a lot of people who will find this is not their cup of tea, but each to their own I guess. I'm just after some advice.
Oh and one more pic

If you're willing to spend the dosh, there are kits already available in the market for the NA, Such as the one below. Though there are a few others.

Yeah not too much of a fan of the dual round lamps. I've seen a few of those kits but I really want the square types but seem impossible to find..

one might want to consider form over function. I have always been fussy about good light performance. Conventional QH inserts rectangular as opposed to round spells decreased light output. The best shape for a reflector lamp is round and size does matter. A projector lamp is different technology and a small lamp can have good performance eg NBP2. Local Capris used QH rectangulars made by Hella.

Want badly, I don't drive at night because those originals annoy the hell out of me. Decreased light performance doesn't bother me as I live in the city

So what would you recommend then? Because I'm extremely naive when it comes to lights etc. I just want something lower profile so I'm not staring at two big squares when night driving and something that looks a little sportier than the huge factory ones. They are a little too cute for my liking haha. But I'm not a huge fan of the dual round headlights first posted, I find them a little poxy looking and make the car look cheap and gimicky (just my opinion) and would rather something sleeker and squarer to fit the opening better. But I don't want a huge sacrifice with lighting on the road.

Yeah i'm in the same boat as you. The factory ones sit up too high for my liking. Hopefully we can find this kit

I am really surprised that the pop up lights obscure vision from the drivers position- if you are looking ahead do you really notice the carriers? A standard rect insert is 165X100mm and a 7 in insert is 178mm. I can only guess that the max difference in ht is 13mm presuming that the eyelid is adjusted. A kit with a projector lamp does look lower but cost might be a factor. Good luck

WOW! *recoils in horror* That is waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my budget. DIY it is. I need to find a solution using a 180sx lamp and made up mounts then. Someone has to have made a more affordable solution! Also where abouts did you find them?
