The airbag in my NB98 drivers side is not working. Is it legal to replace the steering wheel and remove the airbag and replace it with another steering wheel. I was thinking Isotta?

Short answer is yes it would be illegal to remove a factory airbag steering wheel and replace it with a non-airbag steering wheel.
Get a replacement from MX5 Plus would be my advice.

Question is, how did you find out your airbag is not working???

Yes, how do you know it does not work?
I doubt if all the components have failed, thus you need to find out which part needs replacing. It is not as simple as just unbolting the pad from the steering wheel.
As said, it is not legal to delete an airbag wheel.

always shop around- it is an expensive job. I suggest you ring Airbags SRS 03 9585 7702 and speak to Din- he may be able to give you some guidance and est of cost at the very least to assist decision making.

Hopefully not the hard way! Perhaps there's a warning light, fault code or Mazda have a way of diagnosing?

The airbag warning light came on. Many dollars later Mazda diagnosed that a wire had shorted out and the airbag would not go off if in a crash.

I would consider a second opinion

For my 03 Nissan Pulsar
Nissan stated the airbag light was on because of low voltage.
Cost $80 for the diagnostic and reset

Replaced the battery as it was getting old
Cost $140

Airbag light came on again
Surfed the web to find how to reset the airbag system and also found the diagnostic codes.
Code identified a problem with the passenger airbag

Turned out it was a dirty connection on the passenger side.

Thanks Nissan
