Gunk under battery

Howdy forumites,

I noticed that under my battery, there appears to be some muddy residual "gunk". It does get wet down there when it rains.

Where can this gunk be coming from?

I can't imagine it would be from the rainrail.

Any ideas?

At this stage i am a bit reluctant to borrow some random child, lock him/her in the boot, and spray the car with my garden hose so they can source where and how the gunk is getting there.

You would be amazed at the amount of gunk that runs off the roof and down the drain holes via the rain rail. If you are getting water under battery then it is probably wetting the boot carpet, which could lead to corrosion issues.

You could always have someone run a hose around the rear of the roof, while you keep an eye on the happenings in the boot, with the lid open, with a torch. Should'nt need to lock someone in the boot, no matter how interesting that may sound.

What type of battery have you got in the boot?

I had a very similar thing and realised it was on both sides of my boot. I pulled out the drain plugs in the boot and and waited to see if that would help which it did. But the initial build up was still there.

I realised the water was not only from the rain rail but running behind the tail lights so I took out the battery and carpets and stripped the boot back to practically nothing. scrubbed it out, gave it a rinse left the drain plugs out and kept them to one side. I then sprayed all over with a water reppellant (if thats how you spell it). and it has been water free and muck free since. Mind you I give my care a huge scrub over every 4-5 months. I couldnt exactly resolve the water getting in from behind the tail lights but it wasnt hitting anything electrical and it seemed to be pretty minimal

I also gave every rain rail I could find a good clean out. most of the gunk was built up over time in the boot.

Cheers
