Just trying to reinstall the original stereo in my 90 NA. Any idea what the larger wire (black) is and more importantly where it goes) as it's loose and not incorporated into the 2 plugs.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Earth connection? Is there a spot to bolt it to the metal frame somewhere?

Antenna is OK, earth is what I thought but I can't see an earth connection or is it the hole in the middle of the rear, looks like it might be threaded. The clock runs so hoping the unit i bought is OK. I was told it is!

There should only be two black ones, the antenna and the earth. The earth will be the smaller of the two, while the antenna will have a physical plug on the end of it.

That's what I had assumed to Jeo. It has me puzzled why the clock is on without that black wire connected. I cannot figure out where that earthwire should be connected. Touched the back (cast aluminium) of the stereo to no avail. I never took the stereo out (had a CD in it) so am puzzled where this wire is meant to go.

If the aerial is plugged in then the unit will use that as the earth as the other end of the coaxial cable is earthed at the antenna.

As long as the black wire runs from the headunit chassis to some metal point attached to the chassis then everything will be fine.

There should be a ring on the end of that wire so you can bolt it into the back of the stock radio (unless the wire has been used for an aftermarket stereo, in which case it was probably cut off). It bolts into a threaded hole that's pretty much in between the 2 plug inputs.

Thanks all for the contributions. Kain - I was wondering if this was the case so will crimp on one of those rings and try this. If this fails I'll have to ask for a refund for the old unit I bought to bring it back to original.
