Give it a good oil and encourage it, it's either just a bit stuck and fixable or broken and possibly easier to just replace.

The toothed plastic rack inside the pole usually breaks, if your motor is still working then just replace the pole, about $80 from Mazda.

Try leaving it as it is. It is an NA6 afterall
