Possibility/Difficulty of Light Convertion

Postby Jeo » Sun Jan 04, 2009 8:59 pm

Not sure I completely understand your question but I think you're asking can you make the lights on your NA look like the ones on an FD. Yeah?

First up, anything is possible provided you have enough time and money. For many things though, I'd assume you don't have enough of either :)
I can't imagine there would be any parts that would come even close to a straight fit. Therefore you'd probably be up for a lot of one off, custom fabrication.

Having said that, I honestly have no idea as I haven't had a decent look at the FD. You never know, it might be much easier than I thought.

Hopefully someone else here can come up with a more detailed answer and best of luck, however it ends up.

It's possible, but it will be difficult with lots of customised work involved. Not to mention $$$$.

What's the reason you're replacing the original round pop-up headlights of your car? Do you need more lighting power, for looks or both?

Coz, if that is the reason, there are other options already available for the 5 that cost less. From changing the headlight to a Xenon type, to going for the low profile dual headlight version etc.

Here are some pix to show you what I mean.

Xenon with parabolic style reflectors using original round shape....

Or the low profile dual headlight system. Some can also be HID.

Welcome to the forum

Not sure why you want to change to RX7 pop-ups but Steve Gosbee [WAX 04U] already has done the RX7 front parking/indicator lights.

The front park/indicator lights would be a case of cutting out the correct shape to fit into your front bumper and a respray. Might need more custom fibreglass work for it to fit the contour of the factory NA front bumper.

As for the pop-ups, I really see no reason to do this. The amount of work to adapt the bonnet, quarter panels and front bumper for just another set of pop-ups is just not worth the trouble in my opinion. Again you could if you wanted to and had enough money, time and patience (as in anything else in the world) but the reasoning behind it fails me.

Wow - I hit preview for my post and already Jeo and Hammer have posted before I could finish

Jeo - maybe it took some time to find the image I wanted to post? Or maybe it is the English teacher in me that makes sure that I proof-read my posts before I click submit?

OP (mxnub) must realise by now that "convertion" is actually spelt "conversion".

AZNTieN - sorry mate I don't have any more images of Steve's ride but I'm sure someone here does

MXnub did not mention why the change was considered but presumably it is aesthetic. Many people actually like the pop up lights on the MX5 as it adds a special style to the car- sleek with lights down and "cute " with them up. Also many ignore the fact that 7" round lamps have the most effective reflector shape ( round) and the performance with a good insert and good quality bulbs is very good. Unless one has poor eyesight the "system" is quite adequate for the usual urban driving.

Aaah so you are still looking to buy a MX5?

Ok now it makes more sense

You're obviously thinking of mods even before you got the car - which is exactly like what I did for a few years before I got my old girl

Glad to be of service and if it helps at all, NBs have slightly better tyre/wheel clearances than NAs. You could run wider/dished rims if you wanted hehehe 8)

The Nissan 180sx is actually a closer shape than the RX7. Hate to think of the amount of work involved in fitting RX7 headlights. Steve's car is really nice. Had a chance to check it out fully at Melbourne's Autosalon and am very impressed with it however the interior seemed a little underdone for what was an exceptional car.

Sometimes English (spell checker) fails me and I did, in fact, know the correct spelling. You're absolutely right.

It's for aesthetic purposes only. I asked more out of curiosity than actually going about doing it, though after seeing that one pictured earlier it doesn't look too bad. On top of that, it was something else to help me decide on whether or not to get an NA or NB - a little bit.

So which way are you leaning towards? NA or NB? :?:

Well that must be the S2 Racing front bar then:

At AUD$752 (today's rate) excluding the FD indicators, shipping, duty and GST, it is certainly not cheap but then what is these days with the currency as it is??

At this angle it looks sorta crossed eyed. And there is no cohesiveness of lines between the blinkers and the rest of the car. I'm not sure I'm a fan yet - need to see more photos.

Yep thats the bumper I was thinking of. I was going to get it for my NA, however was quoted around $1100 landed, plus the best price for the FD indicators was around the $250 mark for a pair...then add painting....hence why it got sent to the bottom of the to-do list
