hi guys,

got myself a pioneer head unit on the weekend and im unsure how i can secure the "cage" and hu into my dash to prevent its removal.

ive bent the tabs of the cage which hold it reasonably in place but i can still remove the hu very easily (once the very flimsy trim around the unit is gone) with the keys and all dash trim in place.

also a got gap around the unit (even when flimsy trim face is on) which is slightly larger than stock, any suggestions???

btw its a single din unit (162mm deep +15mm for control face 50mm thick on the metal case and 178 wide on the case) in an nb8a

have a flick through this audio section, i remember wun911 posted up pics of his fitting using a METRA KIT....

i did a search for the Metra Fascia Kit and found 7 results,i didnt see much for a small gap in the region of 3 mil or so. i can live with the 3 or 4 mil gap around the hu for now.

securing the hu is more of a priority for me at the moment. surely there is supposed to be more than some very thin bits of plastic to hold everything securely in place. ive noticed in the double din photo's 1 bit of very thin plastic isnt even there.

I installed a pioneer into my NA8 several months ago - that was a b@stard. I had to rely on that 1-DIN cage thing as there's simply nothing else to mount it to. I ended up getting a phillips head screwdriver and shoving and twisting those tabs (and pushing plain metal to make a lump) until it held enough.
It didn't hold it up (the cubby does that), but it holds it in.

Here's a long shot. Some units have a small adjustable rod at the back which can be bolted to the inside of where the stereo slots in. I think it only exists in a very few models.

I have no idea what the mounting situation in a NB8A is like but I do have experience in a NA6 and other cars. I can't say I have ever used that cradle that they provide, instead I have always used the same mounting method that the manufacturer has used. I just bolt the new one onto the same sides that were already there. Works most of the time and if it doesn't then drill a couple of new holes in the oem cradle that line up with holes in the side of your headunit. Most headunits have a variety of threaded holes on the side and most cradles have a variety of holes you can secure it with. Hope that is clear enough. Any other questions just ask.

Chain the back of the HU, and strip all the bolts and screws off the HSF use epoxy as thread locker. Use the rest of the epoxy and glue the flimsy metal frame to the metra kit.

Difficult to remove especially if you take the slack out of the chain to deny access with bolt cutters.

what are these metra kits? where do u get them from?

Wun, why do you have a head unit-it's extra weight.

By the time they discover your chain, they will have already smashed your interior, or will do worse after.

hey guys, sorry for the slack reply, been flat out with work. (been standing new power poles by chopper on milsons island/ passage and berowra waters).

i managed to work out a solution with my stereo inspired by wun911. instead of chain, i used an aliminium strip and bolted everything down so unless you have a set of ratchet ring spanners x2 and at least half an hour my stereo isnt moving i didnt round the bolts off or glue it down either, i would like to remove it one day.

now all i need to do is load all my music onto my 160gb i pod.its gonna take some time.LOL
