ive always had the thought of converthing my driving lights on my NB8b from the std h1 globes to LEDs. i dont use the driving lights at all because the std lights with HID are bright enough
then i came across these in ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2pcs-H3-Fog-Lamp ... dZViewItemwhats everyones thoughts? i think it would look quite spiffy
no i just have to find some that would utalise the H1 socket. or make some up

I am confused as to what you have. If it is a std car the h/lamps have a projector lamp for low beam with I believe an HB4 (9006)halogen bulb and the high beam ( reflector ) is an HB3 (9005). LED's are essentially signal lamps and not for "seeing with" HID's is xenon technology specifically designed and are expensive lamps - none are legally available for an NB. Your car probably has fog lamps bumper mounted. You car does not have std driving lamps. Some refer to high beam as driving lamps but this is not correct. A driving lamp is essentially a separate lamp fitted as an accessory- very few OEM's fit separate driving lamps- most of the bumper mounted lamps on cars are fogs. Your bulbs are specifically designed to fit into an aperture or a bulbholder and that is why different bulbs are not interchangeable- ie they will not fit. If you want better performance you can get optimised bulbs- try Hella or Narva and makers such as Osram. I would not be changing bulb types- my view is that the low beam is pretty good- with excellent light control and the high beams are not bad. If you were doing late night country driving then you can add driving lights. PS you cannot use an HID light source without all the electrical support - ballasts etc.

maybe i should explain a little more
its for the fog lights in the bumper. the LEDs are just for more of a wank factor as i know they serve no purpose in emitting a useful light. its just a crazy and prolly silly idea going through my bored little head today
as for the HIDs i am running them im my low beam behind the projectors. i know they are illegal behind the halogen style projectors and without washers etc. they are aimed down low enough as to not to annoy other drivers and i find them great with some of the night freeway driving i do.

Your choice what you do but I find the fog's a very good product and get quite a lot of use from them. Being a fog lamp they have a very short wide beam which is good on tight corners and on a dull wet day esp on tree lined country roads it aids in being seen in such a low profile car. Some folks get carried away with the claim that fogs dazzle but with such a short beam ( designed to get under the fog) and bulb shields I reckon the irritation to some relates only to them seeing the lights on rather than any real dazzle problem. Views seem polarised.
A projector lamp is halogen by virtue of it having a halogen light source- if it had a xenon light source it would a xenon projector lamp. The MX5 projector is designed with a light source of a specific focal length and if you change that focal length then the lamp will not behave the same.
You can get day time running lamps and in theory if you could get a round one you could fit it instead of the fogs. The drl's are only to be seen and run low wattage eg 6w mini halogen- but the base is nothing like an H1. You can also buy Drl's as an add on accessory and mount them in the nose.

ah the fog lights
go for it i'd probably match your HIDs better too making it more white then yellow
but that'd make the fog lights useless useless and won't be any use in fog or hard to see conditions

well i have no problems what so ever with people having fog lights on
but it is VERY annoying when there is a car behind you with fog lights which points elsewhere instead of where fog lights should be aimed at
just like headlights where they are aim stupidly high and into other peoples mirrors and eyes instead of the road infront
