Indicator - auto cancelling problem

Postby ZenArcher » Thu Mar 13, 2008 10:47 am

OK, I've had this problem for a while and didn't really worry about it, but would now like to fix it, if someone knows how to.

What happens is that when I push the indicator stalk to turn right and then turn the corner, everything is OK. As I straighten up, the indicator stalk auto cancels and the indicators turn off.

When I turn left however, I again flick the indicator stalk to turn left, but the stalk cancels too early, like after about turning the wheel only 90 degrees off centre or less - it auto cancels and I haven't even started to straighten up - I'm still turning around the corner.

By comparison, I can turn right at full lock and the indicators stay on until I start turning the wheel left to straighten up.

Turn left and the indicator stalk wants to autocancel when I am still turning the wheel left and haven't started to straighten up.

any ideas on how to fix this?

I have a standard size steering wheel - if anyone asks. Also I have check the plastic ring that goes on the back of the wheel boss (which is still the mazda boss btw) and the plastic ring is still intact - nothing broken there.

I have however, had to change the entire indicator mechanism twice as I found that the switches were shorting out and turning on my headlights, even though the headlights were down (Na6 pop up headlights) and I would frequently walk back to the car wondering why I had a flat battery. But the mechanism was from another NA6.

Anyone else had this problem and fixed it?

Is the plastic ring on the back of the wheel in the right position? When the steering wheel is straight ahead the locating things on the plastic ring should be up and down or parallel to the ground, cant remember which way.

I think I may have an NA indicator assembly in the garage somewhere .. :?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Well,

all fixed. Everything was aligned properly and nothing was broken. Just needed a little grease to get the actuator to be able to have the proper movement and all is well again. One side was lubed OK - being the side that worked fine when I turned right, but the other side - being the side used when I turned left was dry. Problem solved.
