Hi lads,

Just recently installed a Sony Xplode unit (thanks mx5_boy).

I'm now looking at upgrading my speakers in the doors and adding some in the head rests (relative noob when it comes to audio)...will later hook up amps & subs, but want to nut out the 1st few sets of speakers.

So any recommendations other than factory?...not wanting little 5 watters in the headrest either, but something small enough to go in the headrests that won't require large amounts of foam cutting.

Once I've got this nutted then it's onto the amps and some doof doof. ;)

All the ones I've seen for the doors with covers seem a little too modern to the look I'm after (like suttle changes). Any feedback is good feedback.

Not sure of your 5 but I installed some Alpine 6 1/2 inch Type R's into the doors on our NA8 over the weekend, bolted straight in with the included plastic spacer and the original door trim fitted straight over the top - so appears to be standard.

Quite happy with the results.

When installing the stereo with some guys, they even suggested 6 1/2 might be the go in the doors.

A number of us have 6.5 inch (16cm) speakers mounted in the doors. I have Jaycar spilts, with the separate tweeter mounted on the upper padded section of door.

I have seen the Pioneer cyclones (6.5\" splits) I think they are called used in a few different application and they go really good.
Loud, hard and really clear. can get them for about $200 for the pair.
They also slot straight in with no cutting or bending required, the original plastic cover can just go straight over the top too.

On the other hand if bass isn't a problem as you would be getting more stuff later ;), I swear by the MB Quarts. 6.5\" German made quality.
Some modding of the holes required as the back of the speakers are a bit bigger, not fitting in the holes properly. You would not be dissapointed with these. More expensive though, about $350 for the most basic pair.

As for the smaller speakers, any old 4\" will fit into the head rests.
I got some eclipse 4\",2 in each headrest. $160 for a pair though
Just get some 4\" speakers from Jaycar, they aren't as important anyway.

When you get into amps, the ones from Jaycar are really good value for money, but that is for later.

If you are changing the speakers in your doors, take the time to waterproof them, or you may find you wil have to change them when it rains heavily.

Didn't even think about the waterproofing, but yes your right this would be important.

The jarcars for the headrest might be the way too. Seen a basic pair of mx5 head speakers on e-bay, that I'd prolly blow out in minutes.

Some good quality units though to consider.

i put rockford fosgate baby ones (3 inch i think) in the NA headrests - fantastic. around $120 a pair.

i like a bit of high end (frequency, not products), so i jammed jaycar tweeters on the top of the doors to replace the stuffed alpines that were in my car when i bought her - i love the brightness they cast across the cabin. well worth it imho

Sounds like some of you troops have some pretty good set ups. Any pics?

For any NB owners reading this thread, you can fit 8\" speakers directly into the door.

The Focal 165K2P sound brilliant at $849rrp, however still not cheap!!

On a lower budget, there is some decent stuff around.

* Hertz HSK165 - $360rrp
* Morel Tempo 6 - $265rrp
* Rainbow SLC265 -$XXX (not sure of RRP)

Each is a nice sounding speaker for the money!

If the budget is still a little high, then the Jaycar splits offer probably the best cheap sound at around $150.
