Is the standard NA6 centre console the \"standard\" DIN width?
Most aftermarket radios seem to sit proud of the console.

Miata.net garage makes mention of the later NA consoles having a slightly wider (DIN compliant) opening. Is that relevant to Aussie cars?

No, I'm not worried about DIN height here, either, just the width to achieve a flush install, like the stock radio.

Yes. You can purchase the post 93 (i think) centre console from Mazda or Mania to make it sit flush.

My car is a 93 NA6, but I'm sure I have the smaller console.
It seems likely the change to a wider opening was made for the NA8 in 94... anybody know if that's true?

The right size radio surround is actually from 1997 I think. I changed mine and it made a big difference. Well worth the money

Yes 1997. It's a standard DIN size and is a straight swap for the odd shaped pre 97 unit.

Get it at Mania (link above) or Mazda themselves for around $60.00. While you're at it get a nice storage pocket from Mazda at the same time. It sits below the headunit.

as mania sell the 94+ ones.. and thats what i have

My cubby hole with clock is measures approx 180mm x 69mm, AND
\"Fits all Mk1 UK MX-5's and Eunos Roadsters, 89>98\"

How can that be ?

EDIT: The JVC site says the KD-G635 CD Player +USB has the following dimensions:

Installation Size 181.8 x 51.8 x 150 mm
Panel Size : 187.6 x 57.6 x 12.3 mm

So my cubby hole is for the early console?

The UK cars were a bit different to ours. I would presume they never went to the standard size opening. I do know they used a clock in some UK models, wheras we got the clock as part of the Panasonic Casette player.

Obviously the JVC KD-G635 and the KD-G735 (which is mine) fit a standard din opening.

I think you are left with 2 options.

1/ Ditch the UK clock and pocket thingo and just go for a standard size fascia and pocket.
2/ Find a way to shoehorn the Headunit in. Sometimes this can be done by removing the bezel trim that sits around the headunit, but in most cases the install is less than great.

Would really like the use my cubby/clock, might try your option 2 first, and failing that, option 1 (abd buy a new facia) with maybe a filler around the cubby/clock?

Yeah. If you decide to use it with the correct DIN fascia, then you will probably need to trim it at the top, and add some sort of spacers at the sides.

Jules, when playing tracks from the USB drive, does the JVC remember it's track position after switching off, and resume from where it left off?

I only ask because I listen some podcasts which are a single 90 minute MP3 file, and it's a pain if it starts from the beginning everytime the power's off.

Sometimes.
I can't recall whether it forgets where you were after removing it, or adding files to it (I think the latter, as it affects the file structure).

I do know that if it is left in, then it definately does.
The fast forward/ reverse controls are pretty good though if you get stuck, and the display can be toggled between album/song/clock/counter.
