Show us your CD player head unit!

Postby Alfadog » Sat Sep 29, 2007 7:04 pm

Hi guys :D
I went to JB HI FI today to try to find a cd player.

I could not find anything that I felt would suit the MX-5's interior. Why do all CD players have to be so damn extravagant?

Do any of you have an aftermarket unit that you are particularly proud of in terms of appearance? Post pics if you do! :)

I've got the Nakamichi CD-45z:

But if money was no object I reckon Mackintosh makes a really nice one that isimple and plain enough not to clash with an NA interior:

I've got an old Pioneer deck (see here). I'm fairly sure it's been replaced by newer models, but it does the job well enough for me.

Although I guess the silver of the deck matches the silver of the trim, so if you have a black trim it might not work so well.

It'll be a struggle to find anything that will look stock, now they are all made to get attention,
but here is mine

I'm really happy with the way mine suits the interior. This isn't the best pic of it, but the colour is a perfect match for the dashboard. It's an older model, but I do notice them on ebay from time to time... Alpine CDM 7834e

I couldn't agree more! What do most of the arfer market head units look so tarty?

Until I find a restrained, classy looking unit at a reasonable price, I'm sticking with the stock player.

The best I found was this Pioneer unit, but it costs $799.

Some old Alpine thing that came with the car. Does it's job well. Looks just like a tape player but the CD stacker is in the boot :) Doesn't bring too much attention too itself. The buttons & display light up in green, just like the various dashboard & control panel lights.

Hey Lachlan,

If your after a head unit they will look standard in the MX5, and have alot of features go for a Nakamichi. They are quite expensive, and hard to get hold of :? , but they look great. I have been after a Nakamichi CD500 for a while, there are 9 different colour combinations you can set, its plays mp3's, and has a 24 bit d/a converter.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
