First up, purchase a suitable iPod to go with the car, red of course -
Next, get a good deal on Pioneers solution to connecting an iPod to their head units (thanks to Strathfield in Mt Druitt) -
Then spend an hour or so pulling the car apart and installing it, this is the final product -
Sound is great along with the iPod control built right into the head unit....wooohoooo.
oh, and my existing head unit protected by my lion

I decide to go this route.
It accepts a USB drive right in the front panel.
I love it.

I have the same kind of setup in my car (just an Alpine head unit though) but I'm a bit worried about the iPod when I leave my car somewhere. Do you guys know a good place to hide it? It's sitting in the glove box at the moment because the cable was easy to route there, but that's the first place a thief would look I guess.

Take it with you, mine is never in the car by its self.

I went for this one. At the time, it was the only iPod headunit available:
Even with an LCD display, doing anything complicated with the iPod (scrolling through artists/albums/playlists) is slower and less tactile than actually using the iPod - to the point where I don't find any advantage having a iPod compatible head unit. It was fun at first but the novelty quickly wore off. You're much better off with a line-in, then keep the iPod within arms length.

Jules..
The USB stick one you want (and I want) also has the ability to plug an Ipod in using an adaptor at the back. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS !!!
If and when you get yours. Let me know ASAP..

i plan to use the ashtray (as i dont have the cup holder), line it with some pimping velvet or something hehe, and sit a nano neatly in there.
Revealing the ipod with a slide of the ashtry lid. But like other said I would be removing the ipod and the HU face when im not in the 5.

I have the same front end in my SP too.
But i don't use an i-Pod.
I just use 2gig memory cards or USB keys.
I've founds some really tiny, green USB keys made by Sony and that's what I'm using now as they are so small and easy to carry around.
With the USB keys, I just rip the music directly to the key from my PC, and I can put the music in folders and sub folders and can easily pick which songs I want to hear as you can scroll through the folders and/or the tracks.
If you name the folders and the tracks, their names come up on the display as they're playing as well, so you always know what you're listening to.

Pretty cool isn't it Benny.
Wayne, it was under the lounge cushion the other night when I went to sit down. Gave me a great surprise. It's good to have wives that give you gifts!
It's already installed. In fact I managed to install it without having to remove the centre console fascia.
Brings it round and we'll put yours in pronto. BUT get a loom adapter from stupid cheap first. That way we won't need to butcher your existing wiring, and can just \"plug and play\". Then again with your aftermarket stereo, it may have a standard plug, and you can get a refund on the Super Cheap one.
Look here
http://www.aerpro.com.au because Stupid Cheap will tell you they don't have one for an MX-5.

From memory it was around $100
ducktape69 wrote:and whats required to install it?
Removal of the head unit, installation of the adaptor connection to the head unit, constant power and earth and routing of the iPod wire. All up it took me 2 hours from start to finish including lunch
