Found a neat alternative to the original part. The helpful people at the Ford wreckers found me an alternator from a Ford Laser KH 1.6 1801A.

It is the identical OEM Mitsubishi part except it has a 70 amp output instead of 60. The extra 10 amps comes in very handy if you have added an amplifier for the stereo or brighter/more lights.

The plug is also an exact fit so no mods required.

Best news is they are a very common part & that is reflected in the price. Got mine for $45 with a 30 day warranty.

what are the signs of an alternator \"dying\" as such.

when i put my windows up at night my headlights dim a little and so does the tacho..

That's really interesting to know. It'd be great if we had a small list of stuff from other cars that were just plug & play aside from the NA & NB swap overs. I might just have to go down to the wreckers and grab one for future upgrades. Nice.

MX_boy: Don't know man, my Pulsars lights & dash dim very slightly when I put the rear demister on (and it's an 05). But I think it's just normal with most cars as it's happened with most other cars of mine (but I could be wrong).

the charge light on the dashboard comes on, the car begins to run a bit rough, stalls when on idle, then runs rougher, then doesnt run. That about sums up my experience.

anyone know any smaller/lighter ones?

If you want to save some weight why don't you just take out the battery? Just start it with a battery before you go out and let the alternator keep it goin

Its not just about the price it was also about availability and proximity. I was in a position where I'd gladly have paid $150 for one "now" rather than $50 in "a few days".

Id done a fair bit of ringing around with no luck as they are getting a little thinner on the ground. MX5 Mania located one for me by late afternoon but it would have been a 3 1/2 hour round trip, which I would have gladly done to be running again but when I could get one 20 minuets from home...... yippee!

As it worked out, it carked it mid morning & was out & replaced by tea time.

Oh - not belittling you or your situation at the time. I'm just bringing up another alternative that I didn't even think of (ie a dismantler). When fixing up my original alternator, I took it into a place specialising in them, and even they were like \"nup, can't fix it, can sell you a new one though\".

But when you're desperate, alternatives are always good to have.

DO any other common alternators fit the na6/na8 engine? Thinking pre 98 323 or ford laser.
Something more modern and liteweight would be a bonus

Not sure if this is 100% correct but this is a copy and paste for a ebay ad selling new nb alternators. I hope it helps someone in the future.

Yes, I know this question was asked nearly nine years ago, but for the record someone on here (I think) has used a small Suzuki one (car, not bike), on the hot side too IIRC.
