Replacing NB double DIN head unit

Postby Fuzzlet » Mon Jul 30, 2007 1:04 pm

I removed the original headunit today, but am baffled as to how one is supposed to mount a replacement in there....What have others done?

Have a look at an NB8A. They came with a single DIN headunit fitted into the same console facia. You should be able to get all the bracketry you need from that.

 So simple and makes so much sense! Didn't even think of that and I used to actually own an NB8A.

With my last head unit, I just had it sitting in there, relying on the DIN pocket to hold it up. I wan't very happy with that.

On my current head unit, I've done a MUCH better solution
- You'll see 2 holes on the plastic frame right where you would imagine the 1 DIN to end.
- I got two blanking plates from the back of a computer (the bits that you take off to add a PCI card) and taped them together at the right length. If you could find a long, very thin strip of metal that will go the width of the face, it would be better.
- In the 2 holes in the frame, I put in two long, thin bolts. Each bolt has two nuts on it. Use 1 nut to screw the bolt in tightly. The head of the bolt should be facing the cockpit and the body goes toward the firewall.
- Place your metal strip on the top of the two bolts.
- Use the other nuts to secure the metal strip in place.

That's how I made my McGyver-like frame anyway... :) 8)

Yeah I've got to go to mania to check up on the clubman, so I might see if they have any bits off a wrecked car

The single Din radio has 2 little brackets that screw on to the side of the radio and they just clip in to the dash, you should be able to use these clips on an aftermarket head unit.

I have a Jap spec. Bose CD head unit and the plastic pocket to sell if someone is interested.
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

The double din (non bose) stereo has these same clips, but they can't really be used in the new headunit, as its not quite double din...I may have to make up an adapter of some sort...

Well said adapter has been made up...using the mounting cage off an NA...having said that, i've used 2 really small parts off it, but they work a treat. They hold the HU at the right height, plus secure it in place. Only problem, is the new HU isnt quite double din, so doesnt fill the original hole fully...I'm gonna have to make up something to fill in the gaps...

Perhaps use the later NA fascia with the correct width?

Slight problem - Ive been fitting this to an SE :P

The headunit is normal width, but the pocket size is 5mm wider each side...the headunit had a 10mm gap at the bottom when it was in the NA, but now has 10mm on both the top and bottom...
