Yep, it is a fairly cool project if you like to take your time and not rush things. I would also like to point out that there is onboard SD card adapter so you can insert a 32G card for logging. So that means you can do a week or more of motoring and then extract all the logs and run auto-tuning and inspect engine stuff etc.

There is also a real-time clock built in and this is why there is a battery holder on the module. Again, for logging or any time the ECU needs to report the time, it has an accurate time clock built in.

You'll also note how many pins were not used. I've pretty much wired up everything you can monitor, switch or control and there is still a dozen inputs and outputs available for more control of things if needed. There is also CAN and Serial connectors, so you can wire up 3rd party CAN based inputs (O2 sensors) or outputs (loggers/dashes etc) and with the serial port, wire up a Bluetooth-Serial module so that you can have Android based mobile phone tune and logging.

...but the next step is to get the car over and plug it in and fire it up!

First Start!

Ok, so we wired up the MS3 Pro and did some temporary additional wires for the MAP sensor and O2 sensor, checked the input/output config and then plugged the ECU into the stock loom and turned the key....

This is what happened!!

No word of a lie it started, and idled away like a stock engine - the base tune was great!

Fuel map was close and mostly spot on, spark map is excellent and safe. The alternator just worked and charged normally, all the sensors reported correctly and the tach and other features worked correctly.

We didn't proceed much further as Nigel (owner of the NB) wanted to do some detailed rewiring of the new MAP, O2 and IAT sensors - and we only wanted to test that it all worked. I've still got to configure the VVT correctly but that's something I can do whilst Nigel works on the wiring for the car.

All out, the installation and first start went very smoothy - almost too easy!

Base Tune File

Attached to this post is the base tune that matches the wiring and configuration also attached here. We've stopped at this point as Nigel has decided to remove the stock AC and other bits so whilst originally I was hoping to have an NB to tune and configure a stock tune, the car has gone in another direction and lost all the OEM accessories due to "because race car" - so anyone following this thread can at least pickup from this point (a tune/wireup that starts and idles, and hopefully has most accessories working). The current tune has stock idle valve, stock alternator, stock injectors and spark, stock tacho and the AC and other accessories are wired up (like fuel tank purge valve, vehicle speed sensors, clutch switch and warning lights etc).

Hopefully this has been useful for those wishing to embark on a similar setup for a stock NB8B where the ECU investment is probably around $1000 or less and still has much more capability for more inputs/outputs, CAN control, internal logging, bluetooth Android dash monitoring etc....

ms3 pro module pinout - MX5 NB8B.xlsx

This megasquirt tune file needs to be simply renamed to remove the ".xls" as the stupid forum disallowed TXT, XML or MSQ files but allowed me to add it when it was renamed XLS - go figure
BaseTune-MX5-NB8B.msq.xls

Nothing more will be added at this point as Nigel thinks he'll be 3-6 months before he finished removing more and more of the stuff from the car before he bothers continuing with the ECU install.... so until something changes I won't bother updating this!

Thanks
G
