the switch has two bullet connectors that plug into the main loom. That was checked. Is there another connector?

This is interesting. I have the exact same situation in mine at the moment. Gone through the same tests.
Make something idiot-proof, and somebody will make a better idiot.

And i have the same problem as well, although the reverse light does work if you wiggle the gear stick when its in reverse.
Mind you, its been on the way out for the past 4 years, and ive managed to get it through the rego check each year with a bit of wiggle action.
Looks like the switch will have to go onto my list of things to do...
